Hey there, I want to put this rock in my tank, but it does weigh around 50 pounds. My tank does have 1/2" glass. Do you think with it weighing that much it would be fine in there?

myself i wouldnt trust it ive had at least 50lb of rock in a tank but it was spread out not one large one..
i do remember something about this and it wasnt good hopefully someone will chime in with a better memory then me..

Go to home depot and get a piece of eggcrate for the bottom of the tank to spread the load. Its in the dropped ceiling section and is normally used for a light diffuser.I have a few tanks with alot of big rocks,no problems

make sure the egg crate can hold 50 lbs ;)

Or get some thick plexi glass for underneath. Anything that can spread the weight. Because as it is, your rock probably rests on three tiny spots when it sits on the ground.

Nice rock

Yeah I agree about spreading the weight out. Wouldnt my substrate, which will be sand with some small pebbles in it, curve around the rock and help spread the weight out, or do I want something that is even bigger than the footprint of the rock?

The substrate should help spread the load a little bit, but if you're worried about it, definately put some support underneath. Egg crate should be fine since the plastic pieces sit vertically, they'll be very strong, even for light plastic.

In general, big rocks should not rest on substrate but directly on the bottom panel. The danger is that they settle and finally rest on a single grain of gravel and cause an extremely pointed spot of pressure on the bottom glass. I have a 25 lbs rock rest on 6'' of sand, and it is just fine. But I would not go with a much thinner layer of substrate if that's how you want to spread out weight.

So best thing to do would be lay the eggcrate down onto the clean glass, set the rock on top of that and fill in around it with my substrate? Where do you get the eggcrate's from, not exactly sure if I have seen them or not.
