Large Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When you get to these size sheets acrylic and glass start to even out in price as very thick glass is hella expensive.

I can get an 8x4 sheet of 1" acrylic for around $2k from a local supplier which is better than you could do for a 8x4 sheet of 1" glass.
Good to know. Do you know what the minimum thickness would need to be for what I want to build? Any preference between glass and acrylic?

I think theres advantages to either but glass probably edges out acrylic for a plywood tank.

So you want a 1000-2000 gallon tank? Something like a 10'x5'x5' with a roughly 8x4 viewing panel? I think youre gonna want to play it safe and go with 25mm (1") glass, though 3/4" tempered may cut it. Ive never built that big i would peruse some of the larger builds on here if i were you.

Same thing with acrylic. 1 1/4" would be foolproof at that size but 1" would probably work too.

Lepisosteus Lepisosteus for further insight perhaps...

Ok thank you! I've been looking at the respective forums but, when that much waters in your living room you want to do as much research as you possibly can haha.

48” tall window from acrylic I’d say 1.5” minimum. Glass 1”. I have not made a tank that big myself. If I were to do a plywood tank, I personally would use glass over acrylic

Mines going to be concrete, and for the cost per hour I'm probably going to hire a mason to install everything professionally

Would two smaller windows as opposed to one larger one make a significant difference?

Welcome to the site Jeff. Although he's not everyone's cup of tea you could have a look at uarujoeys channel. He has a step by step very detailled guide on how he built his indoor 2000g concrete tank for his fish room. If you decide to go down the plywood tank route there are also loads of tutorials on line.

When you start your build be sure to do a build thread with pics. We like nothing better on this forum than getting our popcorn out and watching a new build come to fruition.
Ok running out for more popcorn
