When you see your fish upside down dying what do you do first?

A.) Take a pretty picture.
B.) Checkout its tank mates to see what they are up to.
C.) Think of a way to entertain fellow MFKers at its dying expense.
D.) All of the above.
E.) Rescue the fish first for Christ sake.
You can't rescue an upside down dying fish, just like you can't polish a turd! Doesn't matter for whoever sake!

Actually it's the other way around. I believe that he just took my bad luck with him. He's the one that was upside down, not me! :grinno: I see a bright future ahead! :headbang2

Are these all in the same tank? I had some crazy thing a long time ago where I had a bunch of fish in one tank randomly die every couple weeks with no outward signs of illness. It was suspected my fish had liver flukes or an internal parasite along those lines (aka not in the gut).

Yes they are in same tank. I can only think of three causes: either they knocked their head; or the water district dosed chemical heavily due to recently rainfall; or the temp swing between day and night.

Don't think a knock on the head would just kill them. My idiot flagtails slam themselves so hard every once in a while they're out cold, with visible damage to their heads. They come to in a few minutes, though I swear stupider every time.

Possible there is extra chlorammines in your water, but I would think this would be a fast die off from chlorine and you'd get heavy breathing if it was from the ammonia.

I know I'm dealing with literally freezing temperatures outdoors here. Don't know what kind of temp swings your tanks are dealing with.

I'd be cutting open your dead fish. I cut open my one pleco and had a bunch of worms crawling through it's abdominal cavity. I treated the rest of the fish with praziquantel and quit losing fish.
