I've never had one drop their tail, although I've mainly only dealt with Eastern GLs and the Russians. They're very curious and rarely stay still. When they really get irritated, they start "rolling" and twisting their bodies, similar to crocodilian death rolls. But I've never had one bite me.

Another thing they do is push their snouts into your skin. Some interpret this as an attempt to bite, but its generally believed to be just an act of curiousity, as these guys routinely use their snouts to burrow and "explore" new terrain.

They're trying to see if they can dig into your hand. Most reptiles do this, that's why they usually go in between your fingers.
