I respect you for hearing these guys out and taking action. Again, we all have to go through the learning phase and you were humble enough to take the advice of more experienced hobbyists without getting defensive. That speaks great volumes and really demonstrates your true concern for the fish, well done.

I bought my jd at 1” for 8$ and convict for 5$ at 2 inches the jd is now near 4 inches give or take and convict is 3”
Good luck. Both species are so readily available with sizes of 1-4 inches prices hardily change. At my lfs they all go for 2.99-3.99 in that size range for common cichlids like JDs and cons.
Where is your Lfs at I need to take a trip there ?
You would buy their whole stock?. I definitely take my lfs for granted. They get some really good quality fish sometimes. Normally the jewel cichlids are bland and some even with deformities. Inbred probably. but the other day they had some beautiful jewels. Perfect specimen. Big too the males were like 4 inches. I just imagined a full grown 6 inch jewel with perfect shape and colors. Would have grabbed them if I had another tank. That’s how it goes though. Everytime I go to a fish store theirs atleast one fish I wish I could buy. Have to remember and be grateful for the fish I already have.
I as well have seen some stunning jewels lately. Thinking of getting some because I just cleared up space.
