Leo wanted

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would not buy a leo as your first ray unless you are 100% confident your system is up to it as it would be a shame to spend £600 only for you to loose it because of inexperience. If you do go for the leo i definately would not put a puffer of any kind in with it as it will only end in tatters. Sorry if it sounds like im trying to do anyone out of a sale but im only looking out for the rays best interests an no one elses.

Ive kept arowanas with prices up to 2000.00 and several tigrinus catfish up to 15nchs so i do know alot about tropical fish (not saying you said i dont) and i know rays are different to arowanas and catfish but im in love with leo stingrays, 90% of MBU puffers are gentle and the 2ft MBU im hopefully buying is being kept with discus and eels so it sounds like hes peacful.

Where abouts do you live? I know a few breeders and stockists near myself who regulary have both leo's and motoro's available.

Hi, im no were near hampshire.

I still think you need to strongly reconsider the puffer, maybe have a different tank for it. I would hate for you to be so confident about your decision and then it blow up in your face just because you assumed the puffer was peaceful. Quite a bit of cash to throw down on something that might end up with no eyes or badly scarred and beat up. Even though you say that 90% are peaceful there is still that 10% that are not so peaceful, and that would be a chance I wouldn't be willing to take. I wish you luck on whatever your decision may be, and hope it all works for you and that you enjoy your ray! Good luck.

I was not aware of what you had kept before and your right i did'nt say you cant keep fish. What i learned from an old timer ray enthusiast is that other fish live in the water provided for rays not the other way round. What im saying is your water quality is priority for rays it needs to stay stable at all times and your bio filter needs to be big enough to cope with the amount of crap that rays produce. I still think that you will be making a huge mistake adding a puffer but at the end of the day its your tank your money and it will be your loss. Check some of the earlier threads about keeping rays in large aquariums or some of the galleries and see how many of them keep puffers in with their rays, you'll be hard pushed to find one.

I have rena xp4 that can filter 175gal and a big trickle tower that can filter 500g alone. and i just brought 2x fluval u4 that can filter 100gal so im fine on filters.
A few threads with people who keep them together.

Ok Ive kept a few mbu's over the years. In my experience they will not attack mid water fish, but anything that rests on the bottom will get bitten in time. I had one Mbu for 2 years, didnt touch anything then suddenly night after night more of my polypterus (some as big as 20") and big clown loaches were having chunks missing from their tails and in some cases their faces. I would not believe it was my peaceful Mbu. For 3 weeks this continued with me selling 4 different fish that I assumed must be the culprit before I finally saw the Mbu bite the head of a 11" delhezi. Literally took off the front of it's face.

All it takes is one bite, they are not aggressive fish but they are curious and investigate with their teeth and when it does bite it will be on the eyes or tail of the ray and you will be sorry. I just hope you take the warning and listen as you seem to be dismissing some well learned opinion.
