I do not like PETA but commend them for some of the things they do. I may not agree with their method but they have a very hard job. For me its the fact they openly euthanize healthy adoptable animals instead of finding homes for them. That's not acceptable but what shelter doesn't? Maybe not as many as PETA but they still do it. Take for example the NYC's animal control. They euthanize cats simply because they have colds, even kittens. They will find any excuse to kill them.

It will only continue until people wake up and realize that things need to change. They take responsibility for their pets and don't let them breed uncontrollably. People think all those cute puppies and kittens are going to get a home once they are dropped off at the shelter but no, they're most likely slated for death.

As for fishkeeping I don't have a big problem with freshwater but I am iffy on salt. A lot of reefs have declined in the last couple decades due to over collecting and pollution..

So far, and I've been reading their website for hours, the only thing I agree with is that companion animals should be altered so they cannot be bred.
But seriously, I just found another article where apparently buying a dog from a responsible breeder is just as bad as buying a puppy mill dog.
What if I want an ABCA registered Border Collie that is from proven working lines & trailing parents. I want to know that my dogs are genetically health tested. The chances of finding one of those in a rescue/shelter is very low...I can't even begin to describe how ridiculous PETA is.

They believe all animals should be phased out one way or another. That is part of their misson statement, well Ingrids.

Buying from a responsible breeder is defiantly not the same as buying from a puppy mill. Its relatively easy to find a purebreed in a shelter but one that's registered or has great genes are harder to find. If you search breed specific shelters then your chance is better. I believe if you want one for no particular reason in mind, then the shelter is the best way to go but if you want a working dog then a responsible breeder. I have nothing against people breeding dogs or cats responsibly to improve the breed but am against people letting their animals breed carelessly or breeding with animals that have bad health/genes..

I agree. I foster for Border Collie Rescue and a good portion of our dogs are purebred but I have yet to foster one that has actual registration papers...probably because good breeders will take back a dog if the owner can no longer care for it.

I think tbat ***** is rediculous. I mean im against animal curality and all that but thats over board. I have kept fish tanks all my life and never mistreated any of my fish even the larger aggerssive speices. If I cant keep the fish for its entire life without any major issues then im not going to buy or take it. I just think its funny how they try to protect animals but they uthenize almost all the animals they come in thier shelters . Thats ass backwards.

That is a biggest joke ever. My respectometer went way down for PETA. I don't know why people would ever do that.
 
Ive hated PETA for long time. A few years i back in my area a peta rep went to local vet hospitols asking to take and home dogs and cats that were homeless. They were caught less.than a week later illegally disposing of the animalsthey " rescued" in a dumpster all of which they put down. Then the head rep for peta defended their actions. I have nothing but hate for them.

I'd never really read PETA's website before clicking the link...but in light of their overall position on keeping animals, their position on care of tropical fish seems pretty consistent with their overall position on people keeping animals for entertainment.

In a nutshell, they are against animal cruelty. It is inevitable that a certain portion of animals kept as pets will be treated with cruelty or die. That portion in our hobby, unfortunately, happens to be really high (especially in the case of goldfish, bettas, wild-caught saltwater fish and others). Having a fish hobby inherently results in fish death and cruelty. For every conscientious, responsible hobbyist, there are some (larger) number of irresponsible ones. Same with fish collectors, wholesalers, retailers, etc.

That's why it appears that they're against it.

In my perspective, the best (and most constructive) approach to countering this argument is to promote responsible fishkeeping in the hobby: people who collect fish for the pet trade, people who sell fish (retailers) and people who keep fish.

That a small fraction of people who keep fish give a darn about their welfare isn't enough...

Attacking PETA, its motives, other organizations, anyone who opposes animal cruelty, etc. just really isn't useful or constructive.
