Let's get a 'things to do to save money' thread going

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like using the roku a lot better than either my blueray or ps3 to access streaming content, I think the interface is much more user friendly. As for hulu, it has a pretty good selection of newer tv shows and a lot of older ones and anime, but if you can get all the major networks over the air you may not need to stream it. You can watch basic hulu online for free to get a feel of what programming they have, but you have to pay to get hulu plus so you can stream it on a 3rd party device.

I ditched cable a year ago and replaced it with a roku which I use to stream netflix and hulu. Coupled with a leaf antennae to pull in the local channels I don't really miss cable that much, and all together the initial setup cost me less than one month of cable and now it's only a few bucks a month for the streaming services.

We have a roku and use the wii for netflix and hulu downstairs sadly with no HD capabilities. We need a HD one.

We were going to cancel our cable to save money and they offered a huge discount. We figured they were but not this much. It's next to nothing compared to how much we used to pay. It's only for a year, but heck we get a good deal then we can drop them a year from now.

We wait for the weekly local restaurant coupons to come out in the mail, then go out to eat with the family. I've found that if you spend 5 minutes to sign up for a restaurants 'club email' they'll send you coupons for free appetizers and free food/lunch specials etc. Also I don't eat out often but when I do it's always with a coupon or two.

Got a car that gets 43-50 mpg, by far the best money saving decision I ever made. I get gas once a month if I stay in town with daily driving.

My mom's got the Roku thing. I freakin love it! I thought my life was gonna end when we lost the remote! lol

I've never done Hulu Plus though. We do NetFlix. Is there a big difference?

Get a better paying job or work harder for a larger pay increase.

Lol +1, I understand saving money but some things stated are excess. money is made to be spent if yoh dont do things you want to do, thats another thing besides cutting costs in small ways

I've been talking to my gf lately about saving money. We've come up with a plan for some of the big bills.

Electricity: Were going to get a progammable (that can't be how you spell that word, lol) thermostat. If you've ever lived in Ohio you will know why. One day it's 30 degrees then it's 65 the next. We always forget to turn the heater or ac down or up to compensate. It'll go days until we remember and we just heated the apt. To a crispy 70f when it was only 65 our for the past 3 days. So were thinking of getting the nest or some other thermo that can tell the temp outside or just something that can remember what we like. No sense on having the ac on when were not even home and at work. Other little things like unplugging certain items that we hardly use or get a power strip to turn off the vampire suckers. Just doing those things could knock off 50 bucks or so without even trying.

Water: I take unreasonably long showers. Were talking upwards of 25 to 30 minutes. I just chill in there and next thing I know it's 30 minutes later.I could cut my showers in half and still take longer shower than the average person I bet. Along with not changing fish tanks every week. It doesn't need changed at 20ppm....let that baby climb before I change it.

Cell phones: We have t mobile phones and the plan we have is outdated. If we upgrade our 120 bill will now be 150 bucks for the family plan. I hardly use any minutes. I was looking at str8 talk and these other carriers, they would save a lot for me alone. Not as much for the gf, but still.

The goal is to save $150 a month. I think it's possible.
