JK47, when you backwash how long does it take to get all the waste out? I guess what I'm asking is how much volume do you lose when doing a backwash cycle? 25%, 50%, ect...

Mine is set to about 280 gallons (45% ish). I'm over doing it because it's better to scale back then fire up too early (trust me). That system is still relatively new. The smaller ones take much less. The amount to clean them is relative to the size of the Ultima and the amount of mechanical. If you want more bio filtration from them, the backwashes have to be more frequent.

Today is backwash day. It took less than 10 minutes and I diverted the flow to the front yard to water it instead. Both filters are running (one after a backwash) and you can see it's crystal clear. Looks to be a 1/3 in total. I was guesstimating closer to 1/2. Anyway here's pics if it helps. That was a full backwash cycle as well as a rinse cycle for one Ultima II 2000 model.

I know this is an older thread . I am setting up a 350 gallon ray tank and was looking at the Ultima filters .. what size do you recommend and would I need a secondary filter for mechanical filtration ?
