I currently have two, S.A (SOUTH AMERICAN) REDTAIL CATFISH and Two TIGER SHOVELNOSE CATFISH(TSN) I Use to Own at least 10 of each catfish speices already.

One of them each is a male and a female for these two specise. In the wild fishes that are mouth broader have big mouths for their babies. Due to their Aggression like the catfishes like the RTC, Northen american Shovel head catfish with their wide large mouths. also other species like the Male Arrowana, they are the most over protective type of fishes to their spawn. I have seen a male large black male bullhead catfish in the wild that look like it was carrying a 100 spawn in it's mouth during a spring time.

So at least in good theroy of my obsevations. I STORNGLy Belive that the male of the RTC and the TNS are the one with the large head and mouth.

Where did you find your info on these catfish? Very little is know of the breeding habits of either one of these fish. Even less is know about how to identify them on external characteristics for the sexes. Usually in catfish external identifications are made by comparing the genitalia area. Maybe if you were to disect one of each a male and female and leave most of the external characteristics intact by using a side cut on the skin to leave genitalia region uncut. Also generally females are larger to carry large amounts of eggs, and when they become gravid with eggs their bellies are engrossed to an extremely large size. I have never read any info on rtc or tsn being mouth brooders. There are several species of ocean going cats that are mouth brooders. If you can please site where you get your info for further research by myself and others.

The largest post of misinformation this year, please award this person a prize:ROFL:

WOW that took some time to recover from.. laughing that is. Excuse me mate, did you dream that up or what?? How have you come to this conclusion, The red tails how big are they ?? several inches how the hell are you going to tell if they are male or female at that size? the TSN are completly different sizes and will most def have diff size heads 1. becuase of the size difference and 2. because the larger could be sexually mature and the smaller not. Arowana's are a totally different species of fish and thats what they do LMAO.

I am in no way an expert, no one is, there is always something that will surprise you or something that you didn't know.
I have been around red tails since i was born. my old man had the biggest in the country at one point! i have since had a few red tails and tiger shovelnose's.
My theory is that the female would be the plumper one in both species, but i do not have the info to back this up, so i don't go blurting it all over the internet telling people who don't know.

Now when people do this it really pis*es me off!! where i work, Home Marine, in the U.K. we are one the leading Marine shops in the country and lots of people come to us from a far to see us and our skills.
One of the most annoying things is when people come in and start to try and teach us or tell us about stuff that they read off the internet and is totally and completly wrong or not advisable to do, when we have had well over 30 odd years expereince of the subject. Most of the people who post this rubbish are people who have an extremly poor understanding of Fish Husbandry. They think because they have read a book or kept a Damsel alive for ten minutes that they are Experts!!!

So what i am trying to say is if ya don't know it then don't say it like ya do because there is always someone out there who knows and will catch you out!! This is extremly annoying and depressing that fish keeping has people like this.

Rants over No offence towards anyone.. :D
Stay cool, Grow Monsters!!!

OKay i don't mean to be harsh to every ones opinions or anything.

I just want to know what other people's thoughts and ideas or theroey that can come to a real truth. I only say that, "i consider them..." is because that is what i believe not to everyone else's beliefes.

If i can get a dead Rtc or a Tsn i would disect it myself, to find out the truth. but i don't have one.

If Anyone has one(rtc or tsn catfish) I am willing to take it off there hand to study.

All I want is to hear is your Opinions. to a conclousion to find out the turth so i can breed them.(with knowledge)

This guy may think he is actually telling the truth instead of trying to fool someone, that is why I am asking that he cite his information for us so that we can inform whoever is out there putting missinformation out to new hobbyists. If you are trying to spread something based on nothing other than a few observations of the fish that you have obviously owned for less than 2-4 months you're wrong for even trying. Experts don't claim to know how to determin the sexes of this species, and you have a lot of catching up to do since some of them have been studying reproduction in catfish for over half a century. So far as I know the only way to be 100% on the sex of rtc or tsn is disection. I agree the females are usually more plump than males, also remember that most species of catfish are sexually mature at small sizes compared to their max sizes. Take channels, I believe they can reproduce at just over 1ft. in length, and exceptional individuals reach 3-4ft. It is way easier to tell the sex of a channel however. This is an open forum and you are free to post whatever you like, but be ready to be caught and cross examined if something seems unlikely. Please post where you get your info from so that we can all see why you believe this.

p.s. please don't post pics of your rtc in a minnow net above 5 gal buckets full of rosies, makes me wonder if you just got this fish with the rosies and posted pics and missinformation because you lfs doesn't know what they are talking about or what they are doing. Just saw your new post. In order to breed them you need to mimmic their environment exactly. the only successful breeding of rtc that I have heard of is food farms in SA. They have huge breeding pits plumbed directly into the amazon river and the fish reproduce more or less naturally in there, just they are trapped like in ponds so they can be raised and harvested. If you have a spare lake or large pond in a southern climate and can replicate the rainy season in the amazon go for it.

personally I have disected both species, as I am studying the morphology of catfish. I had 2 male rtcs, and 1 female tsn. Disection to identify male from female is extremely difficult. I could not ascertain outer differences for comparison.

thanks Necrocanis! i was hopeing you be the first to put you input.

Do you think there is a size difference then? Between genders?

the rtc in that bucket is in there only for qurantine.(i will take it out in 2 days.)
