So I traded in a asian upside down cat about 6-7" and malabaricus about the same size. They would only give me a green terror and blue acara. Calling it a even trade. He was going to give me a black piranha for them. I don't think that is close to even. Wifey is happy because we have another terror. Im unhappy because what he was willing to give me on a trade varied with what I was interested in. thoughts?

It is what it is, they're in it to make money. If you trade in a fish that retails for $100, it's unreasonable to get $100 worth of fish in trade. The shop owner would lose money. At absolute best, one can expect 50% value on their fish on trade, just like a pawn shop. It sounds like you got about 25% value on trade, which is still fair IMO.

None of the LFS I work with will even take trades.

This holds true for almost any establishment that even accepts trades. Your trade seems reasonable. They need to make money to stay alive. All the "cool guy" or "nice" owners usually don't survive because they take losses every now and then.

Sucks, but that's how it is.

I once bought a 10" synspilum, they told me it would be great with my 3" blood parrot and 4" rotkeil Severum, and it killed them all. Then I took it back and they gave me 60% store credit.

Mala for 2 common cichlids??? No way! I just got ripped off buddy!

you didn't have to take the trade i guess... you could have tried to trade on here or gotten the lfs owners "ill trade you a black piranha" statement in writing that way he would have to honour it :/

You can't complaint on an even trade with your LFS. If you value your fish, you will keep them and not trading them away.

The market has no fixed price on livestocks, I see my 6" - 7" mala as trash fish and I am happy that I sold it for $10. In the other hand, the buyer thought the mala was expensive and he scored an awesome deal off me. At the end of the day, both parties were happy with the transaction.

I understand the whole trade in and we have overhead argument. The thing that bothered me most is he was changing my trade in value depending on what I was interested in. This store sold me the wolf at 3" for 40 so at 7" how much is it worth? He was going to give me $35 on a red texas . I took the fish in day before yesterday waiting for the new shipment to come in. Agreed that i didnt have to do it. I gave him a medium angel and two convicts all three fish over 4" as well. So yeah $20 for everything I traded is nowhere near fair. My mistake I think was taking them in before we made the agreement.

I traded in fish a few weeks ago. I traded in a 8" breeding pair of green Severums, a 8" eclipse catfish, a 5" Gold Severum, a 6" Green Terror, a 12" Florida Gar, a 5" red tail blue loach n a 3" blue Acara. I was interested in trading in and getting an Arowana($60) and some store credit. He gave me the Arowana and that was it and he didn't even want to do that. And then I go in there yesterday. He has $30 on the eclipse cat,$40 on the gar,$50 a piece on the breeding pair of Severums or $90 for both, $20 on the loach, $10 on the Acara, $15 on the gold Severum $25 on the green terror. So for the $60 fish he gave me he's asking $225 for the fish I gave him. I understand making money off of them but damn I think that's a little much...
