Lfs complaint

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you guys didn't think you were getting a fair deal, you shouldn't have agreed to it. Most business owners will try and make the most of a transaction. Just sounds like you were out negotiated.

Standard here is a third of what the store will sell it for. That is if they will even take it. I got $60 for 2x 5" arowana a 13" mono pbass and 5x 4" mono pbass. I want to get rid of them so I took it. I know I could have sold them for more but didn't feel like it. If he was willing to give you more for a fish it either cost him more or he wanted it gone. Your lucky he even took them in most stores won't for this exact reason. You make a deal then complain about it. The only difference is your fish were healthy or at least you say they are.

My lfs wont even take trades - heck, unless they really like it they wont take "donations" either.

What you aren't taking into consideration is the store's side of it. You don't know his cost on the fish you got in trade. Retail cost varies. Prices are not always marked as a percent across the board. A fish a store sells a lot of will have less mark up, and make money on volume.

He also has no idea of the health of your fish. I see a lot of people trying to get rid of fish because they haven't been cared for well. The shop owner's now take on the risk of accepting a fish that could die in the next 24 hours - and it cost him money.

You also have no idea what you are going to be introducing into the tank (diseases).

Many stores won't take fish back or in trade at all. In the long run, it costs too much money out of pocket for them.

Actually I dropped them off and came back to negotiate. And some he had sold already by the time I went back. Store credit is store credit. Or should be. Such is life.

I'd call that a fair trade. one common and one rare fish for one common and one rare fish in exchange.
and for next time, one of the key points in negotiation is not to make the trade until AFTER all parties are satisfied. if you weren't happy, you shouldn't have given him the fish.

It's like trading in a car, look at it as a trade allowance, includes trade actual cash value swell as any discounts, rebates available. Trade your car in on a new dodge charger and you will get 8000 more than you would trading the same car in on a honda accord. You fish was prob worth 20 in his eyes, but he was willing to step up to make the red Texas go away. I do it all day in sales and some people get upset but 99% of people would run screaming and crying if they knew what ACV was (what stores buy products for)

When it comes to stores not giving you a good value for fish you bring in, its never gonna be a good deal for you.
Also stores near me require the fish to be sold first before they give you half of whatever they sell it for. This deal i dont mind if i have no choice. So you have to trust they will keep the fish alive and well. If they kill it, to bad.

The one scenario i hate hate hate hate is when they tell you they will trade for one thing before you bring the fish in then when u get there with fish in bucket then its oops sorry i dont have the fish you want and they try to pawn off something stupid on you thats not worth anything near what your giving them.

My husband once traded in f0 rainbow cichlids from rapps and all they wanted to give him was $2 store credit.

I only take fish to my LFS if I need to get rid of them and don't have time to sell them. I don't expect anything in return for them but will take plants or some pellets if they want to give me something. Usually I don't take anything in trade. They know who I am and tend to hook me up with little freebies or deals from time to time.

If you feel that you could have gotten more for the fish that you took in, you should try to sell them here on MFK .

This, though generally I get live food since i'm there for it anyways.. That and I bring in healthy fish every time.
