Asian upside down catfish aren't expensive, I got mine around 5" for 20 bucks, expect to get only 40% of what they will sell it for. And wolf fish around me costs like 60 bucks? a black piranha costs in the hundreds... so yeah if it was a nice variety of piranha it wouldn't be an even trade.

Not as bad as a friend of mine that traded 2 golden dorado's and was only given like 70 bucks for the pair

I only take fish to my LFS if I need to get rid of them and don't have time to sell them. I don't expect anything in return for them but will take plants or some pellets if they want to give me something. Usually I don't take anything in trade. They know who I am and tend to hook me up with little freebies or deals from time to time.

If you feel that you could have gotten more for the fish that you took in, you should try to sell them here on MFK .

Fish for fish trades?..The stores here that still take in fish from customers only give store credit for a certain amount.

Like people have said they are in it for the money not to be fair. If it was me I would have gone private and used the money to buy the fish you want that way.

Looking at it from the lfs`s point of view, we get people wanting to sell or trade their fish that have mostly outgrown their tanks, or become too aggressive to other tank mates all the time. Sometimes they are not healthy, mostly they have to be housed in a separate tank, & fed until a suitable buyer is found. We offer 30% of what we expect to sell them for which is fair, & as they are regular customers they see the prices on the fish later. Most hobbyists have inflated ideas as to what their fish are actually worth. Financially I would rather take in guppies all day than even spectacular cichlids, because they are “bread & butter” fish for lfs`s.
Also 12”+ plecos are commonly returned & thought to be valuable, well they are not! A 5” specimen is around $8-9, & a 14” max. $20. It sounds like your lfs has no fixed policy for trades, which will cost him customers in the long run, but he made an offer & you accepted, so maybe next time be clear as to what you want before making the trade.;)

Everybody is in the business of making money. That doesn't justify b.s. dealings. Everybody has 20/20 hindsight. I hate inconsistencies. He was willing to give me more if I bought a cruddy red texas ($ 35 store credit) but only gave me $20 on a fish for fish trade. So really that's all that irked me. I own a business myself and I refuse to take advantage of people because I think I can. He would be pissed if I skipped the middleman and bought from his distributor. I support local businesses knowing it will cost me not them to do so. Sometimes I feel like businesses feel they have a right to do shady deals.
