Lfs complaint

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes I think pricing is done to prevent selling a fish. I am not sure it is a good business practice, but I could see it increasing foot traffic.

With big fish there is a lot more that goes into the equation than just the acquisition cost.

It's all opinions so it doesn't matter. I just know whenever I go to change out a fish again I am going to try to sell it to another fish keeper. I will never take it to my LFS again. I've given them some very nice fish and they don't take care of them properly and they've killed a lot of fish I've given them. And like I said I don't expect much but I expect them to give the fish a good, temporary home, which they usually do not. Again this is just MY LFS, I'm not bashing any other store just the one I directly deal with.... This is the same store that took a 14" clown knife for $20 and WILL NOT sell it for less than $150 and he's had it over a year and has had it in a 40 Breeder. Just in it for profit not for the fish.

In my area LFS usually will give you nothing for full grown fish even if rare because there is no demand for them. The one store that will except donations of full grown fish will not sell them for more than 30 dollars no matter how rare because nobody will by them. When i moved and had to down size tanks i was thrilled that they would take my pair of Jack Dempseys even if i got nothing in return. It did not bother me that they sold the pair for 50$ and gave me nothing because I did not have the time to try and sell them myself. LFS are business and need to make as much profit as possible. If they don't make a profit they will be forced to close. I don't mind donating Fry or fish I can no longer take care for to make the store a little moire money and help them stay open for when I need there services.

Yeah I understand that. I'm not complaining about them giving me nothing it's just the over pricing that gets me. Idk I'm just a d**k I guess.

I'll agree with this. Even though my LFS doesn't take trades they do sometimes take donations, like if you need to rehome a fish. I would personally never give them one of my fish - and in the past, I have found responsible fishkeepers to buy/take them off of my hands. Guy at a lfs near me recently said about their 'big tank,' "We don't even try with that tank. Those are the bigger fish that either outgrow the smaller tanks or are rehomed to us from people who can't take care of them."

It has a weird mixture of bigger SA/CA's, Africans, a freshwater barracuda that has been tearing a particular tinfoil barb to pieces slowly, and a large tigrinus cat.

As much as I hate to say it, my lfs would sell those sevs for way more than $50 a piece...probably $75 lol.

Speaking of trade ins, you have to really work with mine to get them to accept anything larger than 4 or 5 inches as a "donation". Unless it is a molly or something, you're probably going to have a hard time. I once jokingly asked if I could trade in my 30 inch rtc for a few guppies...that went over well haha.

I tried that with my 9" Midas had 10
People interested. 2 had a 75, 1 wasn't overstocked, and no one that posted and said they would take him showed up. I've sold one fish on craigslist and it was my 14" Oscar. And I didn't ask much. I only asked $20 for the Midas.

I work at a local petstore in the fish area and I am told to pay $0.50/inch unless it is rare or really nice then is $1/inch
