LFS owner tried to pull a fast one on me today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i now have ich in m tank. i do exactly like that dude. i stand there and look at all the fish for a long time before i buy from any tank.

but i made a mistake . this is what happens where i buy the fish. the guy goes to the back and gets that transition box and a bag. when he comes out he pulls water from the nearest tank, which has the plants and a whole array of fish.

what i didn't think about was lookking in the plant tank. when i went back there and looked at what kind of fish was in there again. i noticed a peacock with alot of large ich spots.

maybe next time i'll bring my own net too.

If they are using NetSoak then there shouldn't be a problem. Depending on the system, you can take from other tanks if they share the same sump. If they don't share the same sump, don't take water from that tank. The perameters will be different and you have a change of disease.

While any fish store worth their stick would never knowingly sell an ill/diseased fish, it is unreasonable to expect that every fish sold is in perfect health. For all contagion problems, quarantine EVERY NEW PURCHASE! Never allow an employee to put your new fish in water from any tank but the one it came out of. If they do, take your opportunity to educate them while smiling.

For problems like uncaring, disinterested employees - I would return the fish and express in civil terms that such business treatment is entirely unacceptable. Tell them exactly what recourse you expect, and hold them to it. If they do resolve the issue to your satisfaction, it is to their credit. If they do not/are unable to then inform them your business and your recommendation to all your friend and acquaintances will go elsewhere. And stick to it.

If you have been burned before by said LFS, why go back?

i definetly fit into the examiner category as well.......

i go to my fav LFS almost daily, ussualy with enuff money to buy at least one of anything new they may have gotten, and i spend at least 3 hours in there daily, just browsing the fish, making a mental note of possible buys, then i go back and stare at the potential buys and finally decied based on many factors my purcheses.......

but my lfs guys have always been great to me. they betterm im keeping them in bussiness

I like the one I go to in NYC on Delancey St, they give you the net and container to pick it out yourself. The only fault in picking out a bad one is your own.

A very sad day. I came home a few days ago and my beautiful peacock was dead and floating. He was completely healthy as far as i could tell when i left. All of his fins had healed and he had fattened up. Im thinking one of his tankmates had gotten jealous. I am totaly bummed, he really was the most attractive peacock i had ever seen. Three colors of blue, brite orange/red, and black. :o(

sorry to hear about your peacock:(

i spent half an hour staring at the black neons at my lfs today and i still managed to get one with an eye missing:irked:

yeah bummer.
i always TRY to inspect my fish before purchase, but i usually get caught up in looking for other fish for future purchase. lol. also my people never really bag the fish i tell them too. so i don't go there anymore -cough- Petland -cough-. excuse me!
but thirteen bucks for a peacock chiclid isn't BAD around a here. a little steep, but not terrible. they are also really hard to find.

Casey, did you quarantine the peacock before introducing it to your tank? I would hate to see the LFS owner sell you a $13 fish that ends up costing you a lot more!

I hope that you find another very colorful peacock.
