Lifeguard FIRED for Rescuing Troubled Swimmer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sad part is...the only reason he got his job back is because of all the bad publicity that company got. If it wasn't on the news...they wouldn't offered him anything.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the companys actions to fire him due to the liability and the fact that he put his own zone in danger for leaving his post. On the other hand I don't blame the guy for running to the rescue when people came up to him telling him someone was drowning, come on 911 is not that fast. Regardless this guy was put in a situation where he was going to lose. I think that the people who saw him drowning should've saved the guy themselves, which I guess some of them did, but still.

typical results of privatizing what should be done by tax payer dollar ,profits over people

Ps, the owner of the company said the fired lifeguards zone was not left unattended. There were other lifeguards on duty.

Kid was let go on the spot. Sure it's a policy, but a write up would've been fine in this case. There was no reason for termination as everything turned out alright. The what ifs we're throwing out are a crock of crap

They're not "what ifs", they're his job...his duty. His job was to supervise a specific area. When he left his area, he wasn't doing his job. When you don't do your job, you should expect your boss to fire you.

Also, no company in the world overstaffs for fun. Im sure however many people it takes to effectively patrol an area is carefully calculated (because no employer wants to pay out more than they have to). Just because there were other lifeguards on duty doesn't mean that he didn't cause a safety concern when he left. If they bend on this one, what's next? "Hey, buddy, watch my area. I'm gonna run and get some ice cream. Need anything?"

The rules are there for a reason, and I agree that in that profession, they can't be bent.

He may have violated company rules but he didn't need to be fired on the spot. Like previously stated, a written warning and an ass chewing would have gotten the point across just as well. I don't think he has ground to sue since he did violate policy but he didn't deserve to be fired for it. Hopefully he doesn't take the job back and instead goes to work as a lifeguard somewhere else.

Maybe you should re read what I said, THE company owner said his post was not left unattended. I didn't say it, the media didn't, the owner. You know better then the owner about his staffing? You can't be serious about going to get ice cream is the same as someone running up in a panic saying someone is drowning. Don't give me policy either, no one gets fired for being late once and that's against policy too.

The owner also said he disagreed with how it was handled, with the kid being fired. So instead of bashing some dude on Mfk, listen to what the man in charge said

The kid said yesterday he's not taking the offer to go back. He only worked their for 4 months and will just focus on school.
