im pretty sure the op meant that u would have to buy the fish with a guardian, like in the uk if ur below 16 a guardian must accompany u to the LFS. for every one of u and me there are many irresponsible teens

Where I live in Cali if your under 18 you can't buy any living animal save for crickets without a adult present

No... I MYSELF started at age 8 but luckily my parents KNEW and were SMART about the animals I wanted to get and did not ALLOW me to purchase animals they didn't want... And i know that some kids are good at keeping animals and parents support them... But if the kid buys an animal then why should the parents have to care for it and pay for it??? I can tell you TONS of kids who neglect animals like i said in my first post! And if ONE kid releases a reptile and it harms a persons cat, dog, or ANYTHING it will effect EVERYONE!

Here IDK if it is just petsmart being stupid or if it is law or what but my local petsmart AND petco in Maryland let ANYBODY walk in and buy snakes, iguanas, any fish, mammals (guinea pigs chinchillas etc.) pretty much EVERYTHING except for the cats....

I don't agree with a law where it prohibited a kid to buy fish and such. i do agree that kids do make mistakes with their choices. We should learn from our mistakes. I started my fishkeeping hobby when i was 13 years old. I started with a 30 gallon tank. I do have to admit that I knew nothing about the art of fishkeeping back then. I didn't know what a "cycle" was.

I remember that fateful day when i happily went in a lps to pick up my silver arowana which was my dream fish to keep. i just set up my 30 gallon tank just 2 hours ago. When I asked the salesman to get the fish for me, he refused to do so after I told him about the tanksize. I remember that day like it was yesterday. i was sulking like crazy. After some research, i decided to start off my "serious" fishkeeping hobby with a few CB senegal bichirs. That was my humble beginning.

I joined MFK to just to learn about the basics of fishkeeping. We learn everyday. I learned the dos and don't. I believe that if a kid is willing to listen to what experience fishkeepers have to say, he/she is allowed to keep any fish desired. Research is a priority. That's the rule for kids and adults alike for the success in fishkeeping. you'll always fail if you don't do your research on that fish. Most people that buy the red tail catfish and such are the people that don't research the max size and such. I do understand that there are a few people that don't care at all for the welfare of their fish. It's been a long way since that day. ;) but sighhhh still don't have that arowana that i've always wanted.

I started when I was only five, however both my parents and I always research every pet we get. luckily in England kids are stopped from buying every snake and reptile they can get, they are required by law to be with parents. and not many parents will want a tegu or sumthing really.

There is a ton of grown people who shouldn't own a fern let alone a animal of any kind. We can't stop the stupid we can only try to educate, failing that try and help them make the situation better for the animals. My petsmart and petco are relatively well versed in fish keeping and general husbandry of the animals they sell. Can't blame all for the few stupid ones

You dont make sense u say why should a parent have to take care of a animal thats what parents do i have 3 kids. You then say your parents wouldnt let you get a animal they didnt want why would they have to want it if they were not taking care of it ? Did you have a job at 8 or did your parents buy the animals and what they needed to survive. Last you are still a kid yourself and you have a big ego that makes u think u are somehow better than other kids. JMO

I live in maryland right across the street from a petco and you cant buy animals without a adult if u are a kid and you have to fill out paperwork for all animals other than fish. The law here sees fish as property not pets so there is no paperwork needed.

Im pretty sure thats how it is w/ every pet store, not just the big box. Most stores will sell you the reptile or fish with nothing more then a few sentences about the animal. That may not even be educational. At least with big box they have care sheets they usually give you with the reptile. And care sheets on fish in general you can pick up for free. Thats how i started learning about keeping fish

As for the whole kids shouldnt be allowed to buy, nope. Nope. Then none of us would be on here right now. I gurantee a good percentage of guys on this forum started keeping something crazy at that age. I had a couple leopard geckos, and a milk snake before i was 10, by 14 I had a locally caught water snake that I had to handle like a loaded gun. Thing bit like a clamp. But then my aunt was into these things and would tell me the good ways to care for them properly. Help if needed.

It really makes all the difference having someone experienced put their input in. I know i wouldnt have even realized i had to help peel the skin off my snake if it stuck too long. Thats why i love MFK, you can be that experienced input for someone, and you can get input on new fish you want to get into.

And who knows Furious, someone falling in love w/ a certain animal and getting it at a young age could stop them from going crazy with it as adults w/ spendable income, saving more animals. Of course everyone's first of something never goes perfectly. Humanity is a thing still, everyone makes mistakes
