So what has been really getting on my nerves lately is little kids aged i guess 10-14 that parents obviously know NOTHING about animals or fish. and the kid thinks he is SOOO cool cuz he just randomly buys a argentine black and white tegu or red tail catfish... And they just impulse buy large animals! SICKENING! Kids this age obviously have no job and half of their parents probably buy EVERYTHING for them including the animal cage food etc. THEY ARE WAY TO YOUNG TO MAKE BIG DECISIONS LIKE BUYING A 4 FOOT TEGU THAT MAY LIVE 20+ YEARS!

My parents never got me crap! IMO if you can not pay 100% of EVERYTHING you need for that animal DO NOT GET IT!!! Then when the parents do not want a 4 foot tegu or a 3 foot red tail cat guess what happens!?!?
IT GETS REALEASED INTO THE WILD!

And that is of course IF the child takes care of it and it does not die within 1 year...

It is just really annoying!

IMO there should be LAWS against children under a certain age so that they can NOT PURCHASE fish or reptiles... People underestimate fish or reptiles as "disposable" pers therefore there are no strict laws on who can buy reptiles or fish (some laws on reptiles but any kid can just walk into petsmart and buy pacu!!!)

And stores like petsmart should not sell large reptiles or fish and anywhere that DOES sell large fish should PROPERLY inform you and get details or not sell the animals... Of course there will ALWAYS be SOME stores that are only in it for money but there should at least be more strict laws against minors...

DO YOU GUYS AGREE?????

You are a kid getting fish.

Everyone starts somewhere

I started breeding fish when I was 10 and I new better than to buy an aro when my largest tank was a 55, now that I have a 120 and a friend with a heated pond who already made an offer for a large aro I got one.

Exactly, you were a smart keeper:)

I disagree with this thread entirely. I in fact, find this thread insulting to some kids.
Not ALL kids do this. Some kids are very responsible with pets. Others, like you said aren't. This doesn't mean, all kids should be stopped from keeping pets. I feel that kids like to experiment with different things. Remembering that their brains aren't fully developed, kids just want to know what it was like to raise a red tail catfish or what ever. I do think parents should research before letting their kid get a pet. 99 percent of the blame should be on the parent. But I know 10 kids who are real responsible and handle fish well. I, was one of the kids who kept monsters and learned from my mistakes. I think kids just need to learn from experience.

What about adults that are irresponsible for neglecting their animals? Not just "kids"!

Anyone can make a bad choice regarding which animal to buy. Intentionally or otherwise. Unfortunately it is difficult to regulate. Furious, you are a kid. But thats not a bad thing. We all were kids at some point.

Im 16 in 1 month but if you consider that a kid then ok... I got a job permit at 15 and 2 months... And IMO anyone who actually has a job and gets income is not really considered a kid...

Personally ... I left home at 16, worked Room and Board on a Ranch, paid labour on weekends and still went to school full time ... was I still a kid? = YES ... and so are you. No offence, but that's law itself.

Ok Then. That is your opinion and I respect it... But,what you are saying is a 18 year old is still a "kid"?

If they don't pay rent or bills yup. I may live at home but I pay rent, bills, buy my own food and contribute to the household as a whole. There are plenty of grown people I consider kids cause they do nothing with themselves. Age doesn't determine wether you a child or not it's the way you act.

18 is still a kid. You're just an adult for legal purposes by age only, otherwise still a kid when it comes down to life in general. Its life experiences and proper behavior that deem a real (responsible) adult. Not age. Anyone can be a kid at any age ... its more about certain behavior. Does the person even care ... if not ... usually still a kid. I've seen kids in their 30s ... and yes they still lived at home, sponging off Mommy and Daddy.

Now as for a law about kids and pets .... NOT, NO WAY, NO HOW. You have any idea how many pets some of us have before we're even 16. Do our parents have to help .... YES. Let's keep it simple and do fish tanks and fish alone. How do you expect my 9 yr. old son to do weekly water changes on his 29G all by himself. Of course me as a father is gonna help him. He does basically everything else himself .... and he's way better than me in many regards. I've even got a thread of him on here ... and before its said "He's an exception to the rule" ... I know many kids just like him.
As been stated previously by others, everyone has to start somewhere. Helping others is the best solution to most of this stuff. Instead of always waiting for someone to ask, striking up a conversation with someone/stranger can lead to a transfer of sound advice .... its usually in the approach.

Sorry ... I'll get off my soap box now .... we've already got enough laws on both sides of our borders here IMO is all.

I think that there certainly are kids whose parents will buy them anything, which usually ends badly for the fish. But at the same time there are adults who will make poor choices as well. Education and a proper fish sales team will go a long way to preventing unnecessary fish deaths. As long as there is an adult present (I believe you have to be 18/with an adult to buy live animals except fish at my local petsmarts) I don't think we can do anything to stop it.

didn't you have a thread where you mentioned something about selling a arapaima and replyed with something along the lines of "whatever my friend still got the money" when asked about the tank size of the buyer? you are so hypocritical
