I also agree that part of the blame resides in the LFS. I chose to work at the store I'm at now because before we sell any species, we ask about the tank size, stock that is kept and the cleaning schedule. We ask to see proof of the tank and a water sample to test. This is about the most we can do aside from going to the customers house and seeing for ourselves lol.
That being said, being 16 myself, I know what it's like to be not taken seriously as I'm young. Age shouldn't determine whether or not animals can be kept to thrive and not just live. IMO, the OP should seriously reconsider their viewpoint and take into accord other factors.

@Chix
Thanks for the mention. Means a lot :)

Everyone has to start somewhere. I grew up in a single parent household, raised by my mom and she knew absolutely nothing about the reptiles that I kept. I got my first snake at the age of 8yrs and he lived for the next 18yrs. Ofcourse she helped me and learned with me because at that age you can't earn money but I did earn it with straight A's throughout school. Within my childhood I've had a ball python, 2 Burmese pythons, a boa constrictor, a caiman, and various fish. When something was a little to much for us to handle....it was dealt with responsibly. For example my mom was terrified of my caiman when he got to about 4ft so we donated him to our local zoo. Op I don't think that you should let the actions of a few judge the whole.

I think everyone went way off subject, talking bout manhood and stuff. I think the OP meant there should be laws to not buy fish or pets by urself. and I think he meant really young kids bringing home exotic pets kids don't want, and I agree with that part.

Its depends upon the kids understanding about pets, its nature, care level needed, his or her responsibilities before owning one, many of us here do but there might be exceptions you know...... ;)

he said 10-14.. I know a lot of the people on this forum said they started keeping pets between that age. I think it's wrong to use age as a generalisation. Parent supervision is great if the parent puts the effort in to educate the child.

I think the fact is parents are just irresponsible it's not the kids. You can't blame a kid for not doing research before they buy. It falls on the parents for just buying these Fish, reptiles, or whatever it may be.

you are right, parents are the biggest reasons but sometimes children eat their heads off, urging them to buy it under any circumstances.. parents are not left with many choices. yeah tim, you are right..

I agree the kids go crazy however, the parent should know when to give the kid what they want and went to hold firm. Just my opinion ofc. (not trying to offend any parents here) lol

Guys, look. I did not mean to upset anybody. I made this thread after watching a few youtube videos that upset me. One where this autistic kid was keeping a 4 foot tegu in a 3 foot cage, one where this annoying brat thinks he is a fish "expert" and owns a breeding "facility" but he makes a video showing how to setup a tank and then pits a catfish directly in after adding UNCYCLED water from his sink, and one where this know it all kid made oscar care video and said oscars are fine in a 20 long for life but when i said he was wrong he started telling me "yo mama jokes" yep. Only kids tell them... It was kinda funny but still annoying he was trying to tell OTHER PEOPLE how to incorrectly keep oscars... What if somebody actually followed his advice?

CAN YOU UNDERSTAND MY FRUSTRATION?!?!??!
(I KNOW you can...)

It was just a enraged moment inpulse kinda thing that i made this and did not mean it...

(BTW i KNOW you want links to the vids i mentioned above but i am not gonna tell you guys cause they are just kids and knowing how much of the people on this site are rude and ignorant the kids will get spammed by forum members saying rude things and NOBODY deserves that...)

DO YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND????

I am only thirteen and yet I make enough money from breeding and selling my fish to have a breeding trio of zebra pieces. So you can't go on saying that all kids are irresponsible, cause its not true. I have lots of friends who make their own money to support their hobbies. I am currently in the process of designing a multi thousand gallon pond, not cause I have fish that are too big for my tanks but because I love fish and want to expand my hobby. And I will be paying for the majority of it with my own money.

What makes me mad, is people at the pet store who don't know what there talking about. Iv only gone to 1 pet store where the owner refused to sell people animals because they didn't have proper enclosures or tanks size. What 14 year old doesn't want a cool pet. In my opinion the people who make these animals ready available for sale Should take the time find out if these kids buying these large fish or reptiles know what there getting Into and are ready to feed and house them properly.

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!

EXACTLY!!!!

I seen a kid walk out with 5 baby RTCs before and i asked him how big his tank was and he said "i dont know it fits on my desk..." AND THE MOM AND KID WERE TALKING TO THE GUY FOR 30 MINUTES SURELY THEY TOLD HIM TANKSIZE! If they did not the man should have asked what size tank! I wanted to tell the kid to return them but just let it slide.

The fact that this thread was created by a 15 year old, child, is hilarious.

You may have seen cases of what you explain, but that doesn't mean every kid does the same. Like others said it's just stereotyping and it's doesn't help anyone.

Im 15 and 11months. And i see you comment something derailing on pretty much EVERY thread I make so i was expecting your usual...

You are 100% correct... My view HAS changed! I have NEVER seen a LFS that actually asks for PROOF water test etc. You are lucky! Most lfs would FIRE you if you stopped a sale to ask about tank size LOL!

Its a general range... I didnt say it was bad to start at that age did I? I said that that is the range i see abuse in the most commonly...

Yep! But a parent shouldn't got to "baby" a 14 year old! It should be the 14 year olds choice but the store should check if he is properly equipped for the species...
