i seen a cichla and a few scavengers and one predator (gar) and it looked like the gar wanted nothing to do with a pellet. And even with those poor examples of predators, the same goes for them. Drop in 10 feeders and 10 pellets and see what happens. Let the fish be the judge.

..
all those FISH are predators..

and fish that are meant to eat fish are also meant to live in rivers/lakes
but we keep them in aquariums..
thus we also feed them pellets..
fish adapt.. sure put 10 feeders with 10 pellets and the feeders would be gone.. but who says its better for the fish..
also near the end of the video you see a gar trying to get a pellet

I don't feed feeders.
The only fish I've ever fed feeders was a piranha.
You can't take a fish that eats other fish in the wild, and expect it to live as healthy as it could be on pellets. I don't care if it says massivore on the package. Now, again, I'm not suggesting that feeders are the whole diet, or even most of it. I'm just saying that, in my eyes, a fish that eats fish, should eat fish.
^In case my post was lost in the quick posting...

I couldn't agree more. Even if the fish looks pretty healthy on pellets, I'm sure they'll enjoy actually having to catch their food.

It is not just cichlids where the complexity comes. I keep cichlids myself. It is easy to judge where our statements tend to come from as a result of what you mentioned. We tend to see the general observation which is why most of our statements tend to be rather broad. Unfortunately, this happens all the time. If we are discussing specifics, we would not be comparing which is which and instead give a layout of what exactly is best for a particular group.

This is a forum. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion and how he perceive something in question one way or another.
I agree, But a quick look at this thread will give you a crystal clear image of where this thread has gone. Thats why i was specific in saying if i was a cichlid keeper I would feed them pellets as well. Simple fish, simple methods, simple feeding.

ok lets get straight to the point
LIVE VS PELLETS..

Pellets Pros.. (hikari)

Massivore Delite is a complete, nutritionally balanced formulation, developed for BIG carnivorous fish whose main diet of live food tends to cause nutritional deficiencies. Using Massivore Delite instead of live foods reduces the chance of infection from parasites or bacteria found in most live foods while eliminating the pollutant effect many live foods can create.

You seem to promote the Hikari products quite a lot, Superleggera. Could you please state your opinions without trying to be one sided particularly on a certain brand? State the pros and cons between live foods and pellets.

Why do you feel the need to CAPITALIZE unimportant words?

You have a good point. But fish adapt to living in aquariums much differently than they adapt to eating certain foods...

Since we're in a controlled environment (the aquarium) fish will never completely adapt to eating pellets and live with the barely seen negatives. Because adapting to live off an unnatural type of food (dried balls of nutrients) would require mutations to occur within the fish. This, does not happen overnight, but after hundreds, probably thousands of years. But since we're in a controlled environment, the fish less likely to live off pellets will still continue to thrive, therefore making the mutations less likely to happen or more diluted.

Fish adapting to aquarium is another story. Fish adapt to aquarium simply by growing up in them. Adapting to aquarium size is another story.

Let me ask you something, would you feed a puffer fish pellets? The air within pellets would eventually cause great problems in a puffer fish.

im sure they will also enjoy parasites..
you should hang out in the disease forum and track the sick fish threads and see how many of those get fed pellets and other prepared foods. Lack of essiential nutrients anyone? There are alot more pellet eaters dieing than there are live eaters. It could be the food and it might go back to my lazy comment. You see a keeper who feeds live has to do more caring to keep that food alive and well. And that care spills over to its main tanks. -----------Food for thought IMO
