Folks, I am noticing the pattern here. OP asked for live foods, not live fish specifically so could we please cover this one, not just feeder fish anymore? Some opinions done are still too narrow and covers mainly the feeder fish.
In one post I suggest worms and other insects, but it appears to be overlooked.

If you were to feed only live which includes feeders, worms, shrimp, you name it. It would be a lot healthier than the pellet IMO. Especially worms. They're great for fish, and the fish love them. These are earthworms btw.

And I still stand by the fact that predators should have a little bit of feeder in the diet.

Looking at these replies and the pics under your names, I thought I was on cichlid fish keeper. If I was into cichlids I would feed pellets to. But the world of aquaria is not as simple as keeping cichlids. There are actually fish out there that will not readily accept a pellet. Welcome to the world of top level predators. Were pellets get laughed at.

So cichlids aren't top level predators?

Parachromis, Cichla, Crenicichla, Bathybates, Rhampsochromis, and Boulengerochromis aren't top level predators?

Many cichlids are at the top of their respective food chains, at least regarding aquatic life. To me that is a top level predator.

The ability to adapt, such as to eating pellets, is the reason why cichlids are one of the most diverse, successful groups of fish on the planet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

But i do agree with you on the fact that there are fish that won't, or will only very rarely, accept pellets. Some fish just won't. Chinese perch, for example, are very hard to get onto pellets. Some fish just aren't going to eat pellets, and we shouldn't force them. My NGT refuses to take pellets without my stuffing them into shrimp/prawns, and i refuse to starve him to it. That's not right IMO.

ok
again i agree with lupin..

massivore
+ insects and other live feeders excluding goldfish/other feeder fish is ok
the OP asked which is better for growth and health..
the answer is SIMPLE hikari massivore pellets
i can sit here all night arguing about this
everyone is entitled to there own opinion
and we will never get to answering the OPs question.. so just get to the conclusion

Yes, in a wave of flurry about feeder fish, it is easy to overlook as has been possible in past threads covering this very similar subject.

If you were to feed only live which includes feeders, worms, shrimp, you name it. It would be a lot healthier than the pellet IMO. Especially worms. They're great for fish, and the fish love them. These are earthworms btw.
We're forgetting that the flora still comprises the diet of almost all fish, not just the fauna in the wild.

And I still stand by the fact that predators should have a little bit of feeder in the diet.
There is nothing wrong with feeding feeders if precautions are taken like I said previously.

Have to admit this thread is a very good discussion so far.

STOP with your massivore worshiping!!

Pellets IMO are at the bottom of the healthy list.
Live > Frozen > Dried
Simple.

The post above covers feeder fish as I suspected. Other live foods such as mealworms should not be overlooked.

True, i should have included insects. I just don't have any experience with them, so i can't offer any insight on the likelihood of their transmission of disease, and quarantine methods.

i agree lupin ^..
but honestly lupin what do you think is healthier and better as a staple diet?

I AM NOT WORSHIPING MASSIVORE
my fish are! ;)
O and lets not forget mice people

My first response to you, was done at that time the thread began to lean on cichlids and other specifics. Nowhere in your first response to the first post, does it say cichlids specifically. Read first post and find out which of the first post when you responded to it, asked for cichlids specifically.
I brought up cichlids because of the overwelming response from what looked to be alot of cichlid keepers. And i am sure that the answers given are swayed to the cichlid keeping side of fish keeping. The OP said nothing about cichlids, so i felt the need to make a point that most of these answers are coming from cichlid keepers. If the OP's question is related to keeping cichlids then I would have said feed pellets. After all simple fish, simple methods, simple feeding. Or a form of K.I.S.S.

Add some other pros to live: WAY more natural, the fish enjoy it, and its fun to watch.

We as fish keepers should try to make our fish's environments as close to natural as possible.
