Let me ask you something, would you feed a puffer fish pellets? The air within pellets would eventually cause great problems in a puffer fish.
i feed pellets and flakes to my saltwater puffer before i gave it away all the time.

personally i think the idea that the air in the pellets will kill the animals is very unlikely. many fish eat bugs off the surface of the water gulping down air with them. yet the fish survive in the wild taking in air. my puffer used to sucking plain air and water in all the time and spit out in a playful fashion.

the only fish that may have problem with air are those that never come in contact with the surface in the wild, but that narrows the category down to deep sea fish, so fresh water fish arent applicable.

edit: i also feed the puffer frozen food and vegetables ocasionally, so im not saying only one type of food is best.

We as fish keepers should try to make our fish's environments as close to natural as possible.
if you were really serious about that statement you would have one inch to a 100gallon ratio for stocking in your tank.;)

  1. fish meal--aka- the left overs after all edible parts of a fish have been harvested for human consumption.
  2. krill meal--aka- same as fish meal, left overs of shrimp after all edible parts have been removed.
  3. Phosphorus-- sounds like great fish food, and its also used as a explosive.
  4. Brewers dried yeast-- at brewery's they can only use the yeast once for brewing then it becomes waste. Then it is sold to fed mills as a filler for several prepared non human foods.
  5. dried A. niger fermentation extract-- same manner as yeast.
  6. copper-- not sure why this is added. But I know in high levels it is toxic to fish.
  7. ouch
fish meal is used to hold all the ingredients together thats why its in algae wafers too.
krill meal is probably used to boost protein, it really depend upon they type they buy high quality krill meal is very nutritious. full of good fatty acids and protein.
phosphorus fish do need a very small amount of it, we also need a small amount of it in are diet.
brewers yeast a good source of vitamin b, they add it to vitamin supplements for people.
niger it is a byproduct most of the time. however its supposed to have good enzymes.
copper to much is deadly, but it is used by all living things and is important.

most of the stuff they add to food is important and not just for the hell of it.

^ thankyou!!
and i can have an opinion tongue 33 shut up and please dont speak if you dont have something helpful to say

The main reason most of us keep fish is because we enjoy watching them. They keep us entertained and as with most pets, help make us happy. As pet owners, we want our pets to be not only healthy, but happy as well. A large part of being healthy is being happy or content. I know that conveying emotions to animals is another subject of its own, however, as pet owners we can tell when our pets aren't right (happy), and we try to fix it. As a society we have developed suitable premaid foods for all types of animals, and for that matter people. I would be much happier, and healthier with a nice grilled ribeye or chicken breast, than I would eating a double cheese or mcchicken. Same for my dog. She has no problem eating dog food when she is hungry, but still DROOLS waiting for me to cut her off a chunk of that steak. The same goes for our fish. Sure we can get them to eat flakes and pellets, but never giving them any food that will satisfy their natural cravings is not the way to have a healty, HAPPY fish.
My point, and what I have gleaned from reading all posts till now, is that healthy and happy are conjoined twins that cannot be seperated. There is no way your predatory fish can be 100% healthy eating only flakes and pellets, because your predatory fish is not truly happy. Pellets and flakes are great. They have made it possible for many people to raise and enjoy fish, that would not be able to without them. That being said, if you are able to, feed your fish not only what they need to just survive, feed them what will make them THRIVE. Which, if I'm not mistaken, was the OP's main question.

Hurling insults about opinions is neither productive nor promotes a learning environment on the forum. Constructive criticism is much more appropriate. Let's keep it that way.
