Longear Sunfish in 55 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Picked up 2 pieces of driftwood last week, one had some java fern rooted it in. I put the one with the plant in the 55 and the other piece in with the oscar.

I also added a heater(which I think is working correctly) with the hopes of opening the tank mate possibilities and speeding up their growth. Set the temp as low as it could go, which is 69F.

I also added some ghetto light that I found in my basement...

what do you guys think I should add?
Collecting natives is out of the question sadly
Some smooth rocks and good tankmates, could be similarly sized Golden Shiners, Slender madtoms and Stonecats; let me just say the driftwood was a excellent idea....Rays of Sunshine has a cool thread here on his "driftwwod tank" with a few fish in it (it looks cool and his fish love it). I have always been too scared to try driftwood, but in the future I am definately going to incorporate it into my tank setup.

Hey Warmouth thanks for the compliment, I am a lady. If you add the massive sized driftwood similar to mine, you have to have strong filtration.
The fresher the driftwood the more is going to turn the color a more reddish color because it is still leeching. If you get the driftwood from the store most of the time it won't leech as bad.

Also, you will know if you don't have strong filtration by the smell coming out of the tank. I had to add another filter when I added the largest piece. The smell was eliminated.

Foxlarocks, I think your tank is fine for your fish. If your fish get too aggressive, add more territories. All you need to do to create territory, is break the ability of a fish to clearly see another. You can use what ever objects you want.

Kitty, you need more filtration. The large pleco and goldfish(if you still have them) are called massive "Poop Machines," by everyone who owns them. What you are doing with the water changes,etc...will help.

I am thinking of adding some duckweed.
Now I have heard that some hate it because it nearly impossible to get rid of.
I have also read that it does a pretty good job of reducing nitrates and what not.

Would it be a bad idea to unleash this undying little green plant in my tank?

Only if you are prepared when the duckweed gets thick to move the stuff out of the way everytime you feed your fish.

It will reduce the amount of light coming into the tank. However, your fish may occasionally nibble on the duckweed. The fish will also enjoy the darker tank. I like when plants have roots coming down. I tried water hyacinth and water lettuce with a disasterous mosquito infestation. So I won't ever try that again.

Okay I am going to see if any local aquariast have extra duckweed(which im sure they will) and get some.

I don't think the whole tank will get covered with the duckweed because the filter I am running makes a decent currant.

Lol sorry, I didnt look at your profile.....I dont make that mistake very often. Your welcome about the compliment I dont give them unless theyre true. Hmmmn Ill definately look into more filtration.....thanks. I have read about people introducing parasites into their tank with driftwood, so Im going to bake the driftwood I find in the sun for a spell before introducing it to the tank.

I added my driftwood straight from the lake. First time doing that too. I normally bleach the wood in hot water for hours. I would rinse, soak and repeat over and over until the bleach smell if completely gone.

I added salt for the general conditioning of the fish. I have not seen any parasites. The worst I found was a small red worm behind some of the bark, I pulled off.

I was definately looking out for leeches since my turtles had them. They came from the same lake. A salt bath killed them instantly!!! I knew the salt I added to the tank would do the same.

No problem Warmouth about the gender thing. You wouldn't know. Some of the other ladies say everyone calls them a guy too, unless a female pic is the avatar.
