looking for handgun ideas for my wife

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It really doesnt matter what gun you get her as long as she goes to the range and learns how to use it proficiently and regularly, that is the key. You could get her a .50 cal rifle and yea at first its going to rock everyone's world but the more you use it the less scary it becomes.

Example: when I first got on my SO's SWAT team the pressure from the muzzle blast of the M4s we shoot was very distracting when 6 guys are shooting one target in a 10x10 room. Now after repeatedly clearing and shooting in confined spaces, it is second nature for me to get my partners muzzle blast in my ear and keep looking for someone to rescue or kill without skipping a beat.

PM me if you need anything.

The Desert Eagle .50 is pretty popular amongst the ladies here in Australia.

Thats because your women are more of men, than most men are here in the US. LOL:ROFL:

alot of the calibers listed are too large for a small woman... a 40? no way. 38? heavy, even a 9 mil can jump alot. If she's never shot before. You need to go smaller so she's not scared to shoot if the time ever comes. I pray it does not. I commend you for being a forward thinker. Too many women today are total unprepared for the worst.

I'm assuming she would want something small, that she could handle easily. And small enough to hide. Something that would fit in her purse or something.

If she's not really shot before. She should really start with a revolver. Alot safer to learn on. A little 22 revolver would be a good start. But if you absolutely want to get her a semi auto to carry right away. Get her a little 25 auto or a little step up would be a .380. both are small, light, easy to shoot. perfect for a purse or something.

Dont confuse the .380 with a 38.

Whatever you decide, just make sure you get her alot of practice. often.

Goodluck on your choice.

OK - LOL, I got a DE-50, that thing is just to big and to Heavy for anyone to carry - But I love it!

I want to say I agree 100% with rybo. He already stated what I was going to say and he did it better than I could have. I had a p-11, decent small frame gun but in an Auto - you just cant beat the .45! I have several different Auto's and Revolver's and a Glock is simple - reliable & unbeatable for the price.

The only other thing I would mention is possibly a .38 revolver. Like a Taurus short barrel in stainless or something. Great fool proof gun with decent knock down. I say that depending on what your wife might be comfortable with. Having said that - I carry a .45, so there ya go.

+1 rybo

fishhooked - IMO small calibers like the ones you mentioned wont stop a decent size guy - especially is he is drugged up. That needs to be the focus, STOP the BAD GUY! but good points none the less. She dose need to be comfortable with whatever she gets.

X2. Start small, and then upgrade.

those sound mostly for show... a 38, a 40, and a 45 are all alot of gun for anyone. He said his wife is 5' and a hundred pounds...

Just starting out you should stick to a 25 auto or a .380 auto, both are alot safer. And they wont scare her shooting them.

If you wanna be reckless take one of the hawn-yocks word above me lol. but i definately wouldnt go over a 38 snub.

I myself carry a 357 snub, and a 10 mm

Yea alot of women tend to go for a .38 revolver. I got my wife a S&W .38 ultra light and she hated it. I hate it also it kicks way worse than the .45 she has now.

The problem with little small framed guns is that they cannot handle the recoil of even the smaller rounds fired thru them. If you get a little bit bigger of a gun the weight of it will allow the shooter to keep the sights on the target with out having to reacquire a clear sight picture again. More rounds in bad guy faster = GOOD. Another defense to the smaller guns is that they're easier to conceal. A woman normally will not be concerned with this since she can carry it in a purse or has it in the house. PLUS a bigger gun pointing at you is going to make you less likely to try something vs seeing something small that looks like a cell phone. And it will give her the confidence she will need to get through a incident God forbid ever happens.

My father in law owns an old .25 caliber pistol that I have shot. Maybe its the gun, maybe its the round, but that is the most inaccurate gun ive ever had the pleasure to shoot. Ive been told that from other people too about the .25 cal. I would get her something that she can learn to shoot and that she can use to defend her self. A ,22 isnt going to do that. My grandfather was shot with a .22 multiple times and kept fighting.

OK i gotta go to work and find some dope guns n felons:grinno:. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Its not only about the size of the round. what its fired out of makes a big dif to. for example my F57 fires a more powerful round than your standard .45 but with less recoil. There are quite a few variables. I would take her to a range and allow her to fire some of the different choices than choose that way.
