Anyone know where to find a hoplias aimara?? I have heard that they have been bred in captivity too...Anyone here sell fry? I am really looking for a smaller specimen to grow out on my own...Thx in advance for any direction on this.

Good luck finding one and if you do find one it will be super pricey. I know River Wonders had a big one for a while but I don't know if they still have it. Good luck with it.

never heard of them being captive breed that is most likely a common wolf if it was captive breed

aside from that good luck finding one they aren't exported very often and are very $$$$ sorry to say

hate to tell you but you have very little chance of finding an aimara. and if you do the prices are out of range for most hobbyists. there are 7-8 in the entire U.S. many that come in are misidentifed and turn out as other hoplias. the cheapest i've ever seen them was $1000 and god knows how many tens of thousands one of the members here spent on his sao felix and other varients. (japan member). and i'm 99.9% sure no one had ever captive bred this fish.

and FYI they are one of the slowest growing fish you can find, if your looking to grow a 30"+ specimen you better by big, i'll take you a LONG time to grow from smaller sizes, not to mention i've never seen them for sale under 12". and anything in the 19-20" range will cost you upwards of 3k for bottom of the line ones. not VZ's or any other area's of collection. good luck in you quest, i've been unsuccesful for a very long time.

I fully understand the price of these fish...What makes these fish so expensive though?? Are they that rare in the wild?? I know large Piraya and Caribe can be spendy too but not to the degree we are talking here and both of those piranhas are not that "rare" so to speak even at large sizes.

what makes the price is supply and demand and rarity of the fish. very few for sale, alota people want them= reason for high price.

I realize there seems to be very few for sale but why?? Are they on the verge of being an endangered species in the wild or something?? Perhaps they are so elusive and hard to catch only Captain Ahab could get the job done. You would think with the demend there is for these fish someone would be finding a way to bring them in and cash in on it...I remember sometime last year piraya were the holy grail, rumors were flying that there would be no more piraya brought into the states then after all the hype WHAM right before x-mas every vendor had em...
