Do your research. There are many difference types of bead filters. The most popular one that I've seen used on MFK is the Aquaultraviolet Ultima II.
300g is not a lot of water for backwashing the filter.
Things to consider: the smaller the bead, the more it catches, the more you have to backwash. The bigger the filter, the more water is required to do a complete backwash.
I made my own filter from a pool filter chamber. I put large beads inside so it never clogs. I haven't backwashed the filter. In the past I've kept a large group of pbass, trevally and now dorados in this same tank with good results. Keep in mind that I have 3000gph flowing through the filter to keep the beads clean and that I vacuum the gravel in the tank weekly.
