Looking for large community friendly cat... Suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd be careful assuming because a fish is tall bodied a poly won't try it. Lol not sure if I ever posted he pic of my old endli trying to eat one of the SD it was with. Didn't eat it ofcourse but the SD died. And as you know plecos and bichirs are a no go lol

My bichir have mellowed with age but I still dont trust them. I am just in the research phase of this, who knows when its all said and done I may not even add a cat. It just seems like it would be a cool addition.

Sounds like the bottom of your tank is pretty full with all those polys do you want another bottom dweller or something to turn the substrate over via sifting?

These are synodontis notatus. Picture from PlanetCatfish

What do you think about this size of cat? would it be an issue with a large endli? Seems thick enough that it would not get into trouble. A synodontis clarias would be even bigger at about 14". hemisynodontis membranaceus would be about the same size as these notatus.

Notatus is roughly built the same as eupterus and decorus and reaches about the same size. So does occelifer and many other synos.

Clarias will likely take out the cichlids.
Is this common knowledge, Ron? I am surprised unless you are talking bite-size cichlids.

Currently looks full due to 6 polys in the tank, will be rehoming 2 this weekend so with just 4 there should be enough room. They pretty much huddle together during the day and take a small amount of space.
Not needing a sifting fish but just would like a cat that would get into it a little as oppose to a just swallow large chunks of food type fish.

Just seen them brought in at large sizes when imported. I assume...should be the better words.

Honestly I thought of geos reading what you wanted but that's not a cat lol. And I'm not saying the fish won't be big enough, but you want it to be tough enough to take a bite, remember most cats only have a slime coat for protection. Because something seems big doesn't mean the bichirs won't try, because it'll try also doesn't mean it will succeed. I'm sure you know all of this though lol was just giving an example for you since you kept mentioning how tall bodied a syno may turn out
