I dont understand what could have happened to him...I know they are hardy fish

I know I’m just trying to say I’ve had them from babies and my personal experience they are pretty hardy

A 12” is still pretty young. Seeing as they can get that large in months. But a broken back is a broken back. The hardiness is towards water conditions. Not aggression, injury, etc. either way, sorry you lost your fish. I had an a.spatula I raised from a fingerling to 20” (in about 2years or less) that jumped out of a tiny(just perfectly his size) hole near the filter and I wasn’t home. Found him alive on the floor but died the next day. Never a good day.
