Lumps on fins, what are they?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Appreciate the posts by everyone. I'll monitor the status of the fish in the tank and report back if anything worsens.

I'm sad to report that I believe he's on his death bed. I filled up a giant rubbermaid tub to put him in. He needed to be separated because he developed a nasty bacterial infection on his side. I went to net him and he flew 4 feet out of the water, slammed onto the lid, flopped across all 8' of the tank, off the wall, and flopped around on the carpet for a couple seconds before I grabbed him and placed him in the tub. He's alive, but suffered a fair bit of damage. He's being treated with Kanaplex and a little salt. There's an air pump, heater, and a seeded sponge in there. He doesn't eat so the mess should be minimal. A water change every 2 days should be okay. I'll keep reporting back on his status.

Wow, sorry to hear that Spencer. Any idea as to what triggered the bacterial infection?

You could add either Furan 2 or Triple sulfa depending on your pH, 3X if the ph is above 7.4 and Furan 2 if below. They both work great in combination and cover a wide spectrum of issues both internally and externally. GL.

He's already treating with Kanamycin (Kanaplex) and I personally wouldn't add any further meds to the current treatment. This fish is already in rough shape, no sense in bombarding it with chemical cocktails.

I read he was treating with Kana adding either one of the two meds I mentioned above is not a "chemical cocktail" my recomendation was made after reading the whole thread. I would consider a chemical coktail as being administerd indicriminatly and an uneducated combination of meds. My suggestion was neither.

Sorry to hear! My big Umbee had some funky external issues, fins starting to rot and some body slime issues whith parasites all over him. No one could give a definitive diagnosis. He was breathing heavy and not eating or moving. I dropped water temp to 73 and dosed with kanaplex and furan 2 along with salt. This worked well and he is fine now!
Just my experiance, if this helps you any way.

ph values in OP's area is too high for Furan 2.

And Tom, I didn't mean to offend you or your diagnosis, but IMHO adding more meds (in this case triple sulfa due to pH values) to what is already a broad spectrum antibiotic that primarily treats gram negative bacteria (the same as triple sulfa) doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, especially considering the current state of this fish. In fact, some places even state that Triple Sulfa is "Best not used concurrently with other antibiotics/antimicrobials".

If it was from the fry picking at the slime coat, clean water & salt should rectify the situation. A little late for that I guess.
