Lumps on fins, what are they?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong. I've simply taken advice from Neil in the past and he hasn't led me astray yet.

I'm rather clueless on fish illnesses and treatments to be brutally honest. I guess that's a good thing since I haven't had to research it much. I may grab some 3x just in case. I'm sure it will come in handy sooner or later if I don't require it now.

No worries Tom, we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. It's not that your info is wrong, it isn't, it's just that IMHO I don't think at this point it's called for. My first action with anything such as what the OP is experiencing is clean water, and salt. I don't like using meds, and only do so if/when there is no other option. From what I can gather from what the OP has posted thus far, this may not even be a bacterial infection, at least not yet, but more of an injury. (from the fry picking at the slime coat) I would assume that the main reason this fish is sucking wind at the moment is from his rocketing across the tank top, off the wall, and across the floor - not from a scaleless patch that is flesh colored about 2" square. I just felt that it was a little premature to be treating this fish with a dose of *super* antibiotics before we knew for certain that we were looking at a bacterial infection that was raging out of control. It didn't sound like it to me initially, and still doesn't.

I also never said that Kanamycin is the absolute best choice for all bacterial infections, but it's a very good choice in the OP's situation (high pH values) and it's what he had on hand.

Spencer, I would pick some triple sulfa up when you're in cowtown, and use it if things take a turn for the worse.

Sorry if I have offended anyone in this discussion, that certainly wasn't my intention.

I think most people understand that you mean well, Neil. It sounds like you're both agreeing anyways regarding treatment, just a matter of opinion what needs to be treated.

He stopped eating the last couple of days before I removed him too (unusual behavior he's a PIG) so I'm not sure it's entirely "just a fleshwound" if you will LOL. I'm surprised how well he's handled the whole flying out of the tank and smashing into every single object possible before hitting the ground. Granted, I didn't look at him after it happened. I rushed to place him in the tub ASAP without thinking. He could be missing both eyes by now for all I know at the moment. I don't want to stress him any more than I already have. I will definitely grab some of this 3x med next time I go to Calgary.

Sorry Neil, have to agree with Tom as he was a huge factor as to keeping my umbee alive! I should post some pics how bad my Umbee was! Thought he was a gonner. OP use your judgment, if ypu think he is really bad and just gonna die, you have nothing to loose by dosing with strong meds, if its not that serious then I would agree with Neil!

Mike, the OP's situation isn't anything at all like what you went through with your umbee. I saw the pics, and read the thread, and was quoted in it.

It's all good, forums such as this would be pretty boring if everyone agreed with everyone else all the time. This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to treating sick fish. I was a mod in the illness/health/nutrition folder on cichlid-forum over a decade ago, and helped plenty of people save their prize fish over the years.

I re-introduced the Bifa 15 minutes ago. He is very dull in color, but we'll see how that improves as he acclimates and starts eating again. The scale-less patch has scales on it once again but is still quite discoloured. Otherwise he looks totally fine. No fin damage or anything that I can immediately see from his sky diving and carpet surfing adventure. The Midas is NOT happy, just as I had imagined. Flaring, charging around, attacking rocks and wood, etc. lol. Not much aggression between fish yet other than some slight chasing (which is pretty normal during the best of times). The Regani is either too chilled out or remembers the Bifa because they're hanging like old times. He even seems to be backing the Midas off the Bifa. Hope this continues and doesn't escalate!
