i understand that this isnt going to be easy. ive been studying genetics online. (no class taken yet) im ready for the logging and what ever else comes my way. i would like to try and go for longer fins. more yellow coloring on the anal fins and a deeper bolder stripes
currently there all in a 40 gallon tank. i have a divider but my HRPs slip right by that. i plan on removing the cons the firemouth and key hole into my 55 gallon for life. leaving the 40 gallon to my HRPs
It's not hard to breed for specific traits, I have three different lines of HRP from the Rio Monga which all started with wild fish I caught in Honduras. In the wild HRP range from bright blue to grey, some have redder fins than others. By selecting for the traits you want you can breed for bluer fish and redder fins, The current strain of Domestic HRP from Danli were not that blue 10-15 years ago when Rusty introduced them into the hobby. In just a couple generation from picking the blueist fish from each spawn you can dramatically increase the color in each successive generation. I have noticed that a lot of wild fish will have much redder fins than the current domestic strain, but not as much blue a body so I am working on getting the fire red fins on a deep blue fish. Anyone who has bought HRP from me lately can attest to it, that I am getting close. DON'T CROSS THEM WITH CONVICTS. Ken
Yeah i agree, no point wasting HRP by crossing with convicts. Just get a pair or more and select the best or just breed them normaly.
ive read Mr.Firemouths threads and he only keeps around 10 in each batch, he culls all which arnt up to his standards of FM, His FM are stunning....
Also how would crossing a HRP and a convict make it the best HRP, it would make it a hrp-convict hybrid worth jack.
