makeing the best HRP possible

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh opps my bad... i own 2 nanos not sure what type..... so are my set ups good for breeding?

Yes. 2 10g tanks are great to start with, but you will need more. When we begin a breeding program as this a very detailed daily log is the #1 key element to success and troubleshooting. keep track of water params, activity, and feedings along with all maintenance.

You will need a few more tanks because you will quickly learn that we discussing hundreds of fish here that get "culled" down to just 6! Be very picky!!!

You want ot grow out the brood to a size where the characteristics of the fish are pronounced enough that a decent cull can be performed. That requires Gallonage, aka...multiple tanks. Welcome to breeding!

thanks.. ok im saving up for more 10 gallons and another 20. should i have substrate? im going to a few under water sump filters... not sure what there called. they are used in ponds

just get some wild or F1 those are the nicest ones. I am not sure why man always thinks they can make something better than nature. if you eventually get a extremely blue fish then it will no longer be a HRP it will be a man made mutant. the nicest looking ones are the ones that are created and caught in the wild. I will stop ranting now.

As long as he isn't making hybrids i don't see a problem with line breeding. Its basically speeding up the process of selective breeding with our picture of beauty as the desired end. I can see how you think the way you do, but just look what Mr. Firemouth has done. He has firemouths that look healthier then wild ones and their throats are so red that i'm betting if a female firemouth was to chose she'd go for him instead of a plain old wild one :naughty:

why do you have a problem with line breeding? and a little update. hence the fact im taking notes... its seems as if my female is more colorful then my male!

I know it is all in what people want I just always hate when people say they want to make it better than thousands of years of evolution.

Nice firemouths I dont see any major differences in those then the firemouths I have seen maybe a little more red. they are nice and if you have any breeding size females you need to get rid of I need one to go with my male(I think).

I dont have a problem with line breeding if it is done correctly and if they are sold as line bred. I know from my breeding guppies when I was younger and breeding dogs that there is always a trade of when line breeding. If someone blindly selects fish who posses the trait they want to intensify but misses another less desirable trait you can get some messed up fish and you may not know how messed up they are until it is too late. keep us posted though a really bright HRP would be cool.

why is it so bad? were making fish better and even more beautiful! im not making hybrids.
