If you want to make money to pay for your hobby, get a part time job. LOL! Tough to make money breeding fish. You need a market for your fish that will pay you cash. Most local fish stores only want to give you store credit and do not pay much for fish.

I agree with you in part, most lfs aren't going to give you anything for your fry unless they are a small non corporate store and you have oddities that they are looking for. I don't think however that you should put down op's idea, I mean we have all dreamt of owning our own fish business at one point or another but it's these people that take this first step that actually make the dream a reality. In my opinion OP...find out what is in demand right now and make a list. Research all of the fish on this list or at least the ones that stand out to you and see which ones you would be capable of breeding as far as space required and ease of spawning...after that the rest is up to you and your fish. Good luck!

What is in demand today may not be in demand by the time the OP acquires the fish, spawns them, and raises the fry for market. I've bred thousands of fish over the years. Made the most money breeding tropheus. Today there is more money in raising aquarium plants than fish.

I've made a couple bucks with my blue angels discus and other oddball stuff ....not support my hobby money but a few bags of massivore at least..lol. Like some people have already said first you need to find an outlet...is your lfs willing to pay cash for fish? Some stores are sketchy about adding stuff to there system.secondly only expect about a third of what something retails for..ie if a fish sells at the store for 15$ expect to get 5$ if you are lucky. 3rd if it is something they can easily get from a wholesaler it may not be worth the trouble to buy from you. Lastly consider the cost of feeding and raising the fish as well as volume.someone mentioned convicts...ok say you spawn them get 300 babies... retail is 4.99 you find a store that will take them ( huge question for a common species) they can buy them wholesale for 1.50 so you need to sell them for a buck each. How many convicts do you reasonably expect a store to buy at a time? If they take 50...you've made 50 bucks but are still feeding and housing 250 more little cons....

I say keep what you like if you get babies and can sell a few all the better....

Good luck
