making money selling fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have met one man who just breeds fish and lives of it. Is he filthy rich...no but he is happy.

Pretty much africans are the way to go he says, Theres more money in them then most other fish.

Also L numbers and rays are good choices he says. This may vary in the states alot of the fish breed here are not allowed to be imported so when some get in and are breed the money is quite good.

then you have your asain arows if you can breed them you will be set for life =P flowerhorns are quite good also in the asain fish world.

put it this way if you make 1-2$ per a fish and sell 100 000 fish a year thats 100 000 - 200 000$ per a year - lets say 5-10K for power and food etc. you have to put a lot of time in but.

Yes you can. Solar panels for covering electricity. Make your own foods, daphnia colony, feeder guppies, convicts. Rain water collection. Pothos. Hydroponic filtration. Then sell the terrestrial plants from that. Cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, oebt shrimp, aquatic plants, and fancy guppies or breed expensive tetras all in 1 tank. The shrimps are compatible. Led lights. Then put styrafoam on all cracks and surfaces to prevent heat/evap loss. Cover the entire bottom of tank with moss balls. Then buy everything as cheap as humanely possible. Online, through ebay, clearance sales, 90+% off, craigslist free section. And starve your fish. Feed the fish (fry included) once a week. They probably wont grow but they'll live. I do it to my baby datnoid, he's 3 years old and 1/2", feed him frozen bloodworms once a week. Sometimes even once/two weeks. And then breed zebra plecos. And get EXPENSIVE guppies, thousand dollar show guppies breed em and sell em back. Oh and your own feeder fish colony. Along

I agree with whats said so far...

I have attempted this and unless you have a fish with a market and that you can ship/sell online chances are you won't be making much. I found a demand for some of the fish I have, but all are out of state. For me this is a problem b/c the closest place that sells proper shipping supplies is 40-50min away in a direction I never travel, I also can't guarantee live arrival. I just don't bother. At one point in time my fish went for a decent junk but they have seemed to drop a bit in value, so I feel like its not really worth it. If you plan to breed I would go with something more rare/hard to get or come by. i wouldn't bother LFS chances are they wont buy, will give a super low amount of store credit. I have yet to find one that would pay cash or give a decent amount of store credit. Now If you can afford to set up a small ornamental fish farm in your backyard maybe you could make something. To get enough fish to make any money will cost on the setups you need to support said fish. If you have the time and money to put in for an initial investment for a large fish room or small scale farm in the yard and breed the right things then you might be able to make something. Then again you also have research your states laws on this b/c some states may require a license or permit to do so.

LOL! You would need a fish farm to raise 100,000 fish/year.

Op even if your LFS only gives you store credit... That's all your really wanting nyway right? Money to pay for the hobby? If you can get everything from your LFS then you should have no problem. Good luck!

Not quite if you set it up right. Used to go to a local breeder to buy from as both a hobbyist and shop owner. He produced 500,000 fish easily a year in 800 sq ft. Blowers, air driven filters, heated building, and tanks literally from floor to ceiling. Bred africans, discus, angels, and synodontis.

Why would you only feed your fish once a week just to save a little money? And if the fry dont grow, he wont have anything to sell.

Oh boy! It must have been some setup to spawn and raise 1,370 fish per day in 800 square feet of space. Pictures or it didn't happen. LOL!

Best way to make some money is breed lots of different fish. It is also going to require lots of tanks and is pretty much a full time job. Now, if you just want to make a a little money on the side to offset some costs of your hobby you can do that with 2-3 tanks and the right fish.
