making money selling fish

When my Blue-Gene Jack Dempsey spawn, I usually get a few Electric-Blue fry. They're always easy for me to sell. NO LFS will pay retail price for any fish though! The want them at wholesale or better. So it's hard to make real money unless you give up your regular job and devote your life to breeding! Lol that's my 2¢

Let's add stingrays cost up . Just some simple stuff. 300 gallon tank let's say filtering and everything used $1500.00 food for a trio plus pups shrimp worms and pellets shrimp about 12.00 a month with a bag of massivore lasting about 3 months. And worms needed 48 per month minimum depending on if you have pups or not. About 450.00 a year and then buy the trio let's say small and take two years to maybe produce then. Trio black diamonds $4k
so by the time you are just ready to have your first pups you have already spent About $6,000.00 start up cost of such as you can see is expensive. And with pups you with need another tank so add on more money. Flowerhorns / discus/ and other fish are a cheaper start up and easier .

I've tried this in the past. Its not as simple. My best advice is to make sure what ever your breeding has some type of value. As stated before most lfs wont buy them in cash and if they do its low balled prices. Especially with commonly breed species. You could try aquabid. Many vendors sell their fish up there. Also I'm not sure if anyone said it but many tanks is a must.

I agree with... Buy fish you like.. hope they breed, and you can sell off some babies to offset your feed bill.... unless your are setting up a massive system or tanks ect your not going to make money "small time breeders" are all hobbyists for a reason. they break even if lucky. may as well do it with fish you enjoy haveing around. Kevin's point about the rays is imo being very generouse... rays are also more delicate and require a certain level of dedication, and overall experiance with fish ( not sure where the OP falls in this bracket) The market is also fairly small, and if you don't know what your doing you can get into trouble easily with shipping/ect.

And i think the point that most if not everyone here has liekly thought of doign this an how many actually are either breaking even or comign ahead shows how impractical it is... I still have my goals of breeding certain species, and no one will ever dissuade me otherwise, but i've learned not to expect to make money on the endevor.
 
Get fish u like n hope they breed n sell them. Or do a system like convicts to breed as food for a redbelly breeding pair. Both breed a lot n grow quickly. And u can sell fry from both species fairly easily
 
There are a few species that have relatively constant demand that work for this as long as you are willing to put in the time and invest in good quality broodstock. Angels, discus, some african cichlids all have a pretty stable demand, decent price, and newbies kill a lot of them so there is a constant need to replenish.
 
Not a fish but red cherry shrimp are easy to breed and are worth around $1-2 each. They also have a pretty high demand (well at least in my area). When you are more experienced you can move up to crs shrimp which can be worth $5-30 each.
 
This is true I have seen some go for good money, and constantly. This is what I would try for fun,.
