Malabaricus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just been studying yours, has a different head shape to mine, the head seems longer on mine with a larger eye,

Remember mine is 9", also there seems to be massive variation in mala...
Have you checked the shape of the gills from underneath? If not can you get a pic. If it's a v it's likely mala, if they don't touch and it's more u shaped could be something else.

They will have a better idea than me pal.
Looks to be v shaped mind. Think mala and one other species have the v, it's LL counts and pore counts after that I think...

Thanks, thought it was just had a few doubts because wharf aquatics sold it as a hoplias spp, in the tank next to it they had one up as a hoplias malabaricus, they also had two reds and two 12 inch aimara in the past they have had blacks and gold's, just seemed strange they didn't assign a spp to it. Got it cheaper then the one they had advertised as a mala though.

He does look completely different from mine tho, so much variation in the common wolf I guess. Look at any wild species tho, Oscars for example... Wild Oscars look completely different to each other depending on catch location.
I'm guessing commons have the largest range, this means the largest diversity I guess.

Yeah, the ones from South Argentina are sub tropical, temps drop down to 12 degrees and they sort of hibernate over winter, yet live longer and still reach 24inch all the way up to the equator, big range for one spp.

Gotta recheck when bigger and colors up. The head is angled and eyes have that green hue.
