Well, my male midas and female carpintis spawned many months back earlier this year, and I was so excited! I really hoped to have offspring that appeared to be similar in appearance to a reddish orange texas, or such.

However, when my spawns grew up... lo and behold they looked like their father, yet with much less coloration. Not one single carpintis spangle-colored specimen.

Anyone ever have this happen before? I thought for sure they'd get "some" of their mother's characteristics.

Below is a picture of the mother and one of her juvenile male youngsters (which has nearly caught up with her in size already).

I thought about doing that.

I left two of the babies in the tank with the mother--which they've already grown to her size.

My LFS took the rest of them, and put them up for sale recently as Red Devils.

There is ONE runt, however, from the mix, which so far has no color at all and is nearly see-through. I have him housed in a grow-out tank until I can find out what he/she is. I "think" I can almost see spots forming on him--I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

I need to post a pic of the father too. He's an incredible fish. Hard to get him out of his cavern without feeding though, heh.

Very very bad idea to sell these hybrids, especially as Tex or RD.

If you want to breed hybrids as feeders or for your own enjoyment fine, but please dont put them out to the public.

Did I mention that this is a VERY bad idea?

Please move this to the Hybrid forum so more people dont get pissed off too.

Well, I did not sell them. I "gave" them to the pet store. They carry hybrids of many kinds, so it wasn't anything new to them. I explained to them precisely what they came from. How they choose to advertise them is their business, and not much I can do about that.

As for the spawn itself, it was not something I purposely arranged or planned on. I have numerous aquariums with many mixtures of fishes--most of which were raised together from the "fry" to 1" range. When the Midas and Carpintis spawned, it caught me by surpirse--nonetheless, I was still excited at the thought of a "Red Texas" as some folks tend to flaunt, and let nature take its course and they bred successfully in a tank full of other fish. I'm sure most of the spawn was eaten before I salvaged the ones I did acquire.

I did not have room for 34 new Cichlids--but I wasn't about to kill them either. So I gave them away and kept 3 for myself. Two normal ones and a runt.

I should probably also mention that there were other "Male" Carpintis' also in the aquarium as well, and yet the Female chose a Midas over them. I won't apologize for not stopping what two free-willed fish chose to start on their own. I certainly wasn't intending to go out and make a profit on it, if that's what you are thinking.

I agree, though, the thread should be moved to the Hybrid section. I didn't mean to post it here.
