My mom just texted me and told me about a new paper article she just read about a man who was killed by his pet boa and i think shes a bit scared as i have one that it will happen to me, i was wondering what you guys think? From the sounds of it the boa wasnt agressive just scared and he handled it near his neck aswell. Im scared that she will make me have to rehome my boa which sucks as love her to bits :/ What do you guys think to this? and any messages to make my mom believe me that this was afreak accident and as long as am safe and mature with ny boa as she grows ill be ok. Thanx guys!

Heres a link - http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-...oked-to-death-by-his-pet-boa-115875-22331947/
Heres what the article says -
"A man has become the first person in the US to be killed by a pet boa constrictor.
Cory Byrne died after the 9ft-long snake wrapped itself around his shoulders and neck, strangling him.
He was showing the animal to his roommate's girlfriend, draping it over his shoulders, when it started to squeeze.
The victim's sister Kayla said the snake didn't attack him: "It was scared. When you put a baby down it grabs on to you - that's what kind of reflex it was."

She said the family warned him it was dangerous.
The Nebraska Humane Society is looking for a zoo for the red-tailed boa.
The Human Society of the US said at least 13 people have been killed in the US by pet pythons since 1980 but this was the first boa victim"

People just get caught in the moment and lose their common sense. Show the boa the respect it deserves. I suppose the guy tried to wrench it off, as would people who didn't do their research. If it does get onto your neck or squeezing you to an uncomfortable extent, UNWRAP it from the tail. Have fun with a snake that I cant get!

well it happens alot i got a 10ft retic from a guy that got strangled and almost passed out if it wasnt for his wife walkin he would have been.u just have to use common sense.
i dont take my snakes out without someone else bein there. well at least the big ones.

Thanx guys, ive always used my common sense around snakes and read their body language to guage how they are feeling. I suppose its just a case of common sense and i would never handle my boa if she passes 8ft on my own.

I don't think that a Red tailed Boa (even a big one) could have the strength to wrap around and choke you with out you being able to unwrap it, especially in this case where there WERE other people around. It makes me wonder if the guy had any other conditions that led to this, maybe asthma or something that would have made it difficult for the guy to breath anyways? Just a theory but this story seems suspect to me since from what I could gather from the story, his roommate, roommate's girlfriend, and sister were all there when it happened.

Were drugs involved? how come nobody pulled the snake off him?

oh for gods sake! good job it wasnt over here though

if i get the burm out around people i always tell them that if he starts to squeeze, unwind from the tail.
did they just sit there and watch?

lol just reading what everyone else said and seen i just repeated it.
on another forum i wrote out my own lil rules i use when i handle...il see if i can find them.
x

here we go...this is what i wrote on a thing that someone had posted up saying about banning pythons and any large snake....obv this is only what i do with my lot and apart from my bite the other day which was entirely my fault, i have never EVER had a problem with any of my lot.......

not sure if this is still relevant to the thread or not but a while ago i posted up a thread with some info i found about the causes of deaths by snakes.
it turned out all of them (i spose there was also some that were undocumented) were due to owners not taking care of their animals correctly.
one was just a boy that got it for show and thought it was cool...didnt end that way for him.
another was just kept on top of a fridge, anothers viv was left open, others were never fed.

personally, mine has a lock on his viv and is kept out the way of full view of my lil girl, just so she doesnt aggravate.
he never comes out when shes around.
i open his viv and let him come out when he wants and he will usually do a circuit of the room then come and cuddle up on the sofa with me, then i walk to his viv and he follows me and goes back in.
he gets fed monthly on a rabbit.
obv hes kept at the correct temps and cleaned out, big water bowl, hide etc.
i also close the door to the lounge/dining room whenever we go out or to bed so if anything WAS to get out it is confined to that room and doesnt go upstairs.

i think what im trying to say is deaths r usually caused (only by what iv read) by people irresponsibility and ignorance of a large, technically wild, animal.
im almost over cautious with all my animals as it is only me and my lil girl.
technically i shouldnt have the burm, but hes soppy as sin (not that thats an excuse) but also i dont invade his space and if he doesnt want to come out i shut his viv and leave him, i find if i respect him then its all good.

Thanx for that chloe, great read!

lol i know i went a little overkill, but thats what i do and its put my mums mind and ease.
i think u just have to respect that they r still a wild animal no matter how soppy. u show it respect and u should be safe
