Do I believe in man's law ? NO...it's more of an excuse than a law.
In the end, you are the only person that can make you happy, so just go with your heart.

Whatever you do, you need to NOT ruin any couple's relationship...especially your friend's. Let them resolve their issues, talk to your buddy and make your move.

man laws aside, i wouldnt do it. there just somethign thats totally wrong about being with your buddy's girl, especially if she left him just for you. put yourself in his shoes, how would you feel if he stole your girl?

and as others have said, if she'd leave him w/o hesitation, she'll do it to you too

I agree with gobucks1. If he's truly your friend, it will kill the friendship. It's possible you'll find out she's the girl you've always wanted, but you're more likely to find out she's better as a friend, but by then you won't have either of them as friends.
