managuense without venting can you sex?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a female to me. I say this based upon a lack of spotting and overall rounded body shape. How big is the fish?

While most people commenting on this thread probably know more than me about Jaguars, let me just highlight one problem: When you reply to a thread like this with one word "MALE" or "FEMALE" it really doesn't help a lot.

My attempt:

I think one of the more easily identifiable characteristics of a Male Jag at that size is the presence of spots on the lower "jaw" and below the lateral thick line of larger spots.

In Female Jags, there are little or no spots below the line of thick line of larger spots.

There are other pointers (like ends of fins and body shape, etc), but I am not a 100% convinced they are always accurate or easy to judge.

Going by above criteria: OP's Jag is a Male.

Cheers,
Sid

PS: While there is a possibility my conclusion might be wrong, I just want to request those of you who are more informed to have a similar format to your response.

Thank you :)

If I only give a one word answer, its because I'm sure, lol. As in, no doubt male. I know a thing or two about managuense. I did go back and list the male traits in a later post. Still, I'd almost bet my tank on male.

Take it out and vent it.

HAHA...thats what I say too, but like me, he probably has to remove every frickin thing in the tank just to catch that one fish. It can take me up to 3 hrs just to get one fish out of the tank by the time I move the furniture to get to the tank, pull all the driftwood/plants/boulders etc.

As Im sure you know, if they can hide under it, they will :irked: so the ol "sex without venting" thread is born.

Id say male too, but Im no expert on them. Ive never had one that didnt get its *** beat by other tankmates and have to be re-homed after a short period of time.
