  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whats the difference? In a few months it'll be a solid colored ugly brown with no character.

Not even. My friend has had his in his 55 gallon tank that he set up several months ago and it looks beautiful.

i've never seen one. Do i go to the mountain or where? I live in the city. LA county

I suspect you could go to the Sierras and grab some there. Or you could make a trip of it and go up through SF ( a lot of nice LFS there) and wind up in the Santa Cruz area. I'm sure there are closer locations but why not see beautiful, weird SC? Haha its certainly an experiance.

Ruined chainsaws you say? Man I must have gotten lucky and cut off a weak branch or something. I'm sorry for your chainsaws. Next time use a arc welder.

Chase it's not in SC it's in Scott's valley or Watsonville and the water in your tank will NOT turn orange, the only reason it would turn orange is if you sanded it down before you put it in the tank, doing this would open up the pores in the wood letting out the oils.. Do not do that, haha I made that mistake my self and I had to soke it for a week. The white algae that will grow will go away it's just a matter of time but chase is right do not wash it off not only will it make it worse for your fish, it will grow back the next day.

I just use mountain laurel.

No it's good now but I'd say if anybody plans on getting manzanita in your tank it's better if ou bake it for 6 hours not 4 I did It fr 4 and it turned out good but most people will do it for 6 hours

Ya know guys, it is legal to harvest "dead wood" from Forest Service Land in CA (also AZ too). Some areas have posted in their regulations that you have to buy a wood collecting permit but just give the office a ring and tell them you only need a few pieces for your fish tank, they'll most likely laugh and waive the fee. Oh yeah, the Forest Service and USGS websites typically have maps of manzanita areas because its considered a pest to the extent that they have to go clean it out every decade or so. It'll choke out the rest of the shrubs and small trees.

If you collect dead wood from the ground, in most cases you don't need to bake it at all. I have a few really long branches (5 ft +) that I just hosed and scrubbed the dirt off of and then soaked in a horse trough till it sunk. I've never had the white algae junk either, though my buddy who did use a live branch does have it on his more than a year later.

Well the manzanita is cut off was on m property, but I dont know about calebs, it sounds like his is illegally gotten. The reason we baked it was so it wouldnt leach any stuffs into the water and it got rid of any bugs or other things that might harm your tank. My fish actually enjoy eating the algae when it grows long enough.
