I noticed this too. I am wondering if its a case surviving in fresh water just fine, but thriving in marine/brackish.
There are a few fish like this (some archers, puffers, monos and scats etc) that I have seen people keep in fresh, and they seem fine and healthy because they are hardy and can survive, but move them the their proper environment and you seem them blossom and thrive.
So I got the mollies a new tank mate
And just like that... all the mollies disappeared.

I was waiting for it to happen, hasnt yet though. He doesnt seem very interested in the mollies, even when they try to steal the shrimp out his mouth haha

White eyes from what I read don’t seem to be much of voracious fish eaters like their cousins.
Think you've inspired me to add some mollies to my angel tank. I need algae control stat.
There are numerous other wild molly types that are also very attractive. some of them are very colorful.
Poecilia caucana, Poecilia salvatoris, and the entire sphenops complex.
Here is an example of a very colorful wild Poecilia sphenops kept in brackish tank

I really love the looks of the wild/natural types. I would have got those for sure if they were available
