I've got a background in both martial arts and medicine. Yeah most likly it the outward force of the spin both stretching your joints and forcing the blood out there. It's sting for a bit but unless your cardiovascular system is shot not harm done.
I'll go with the above posters and say you want to spin on the ball not the heel. Too easy to rock forward and plant your toes. This will stop the foot but not the torso. Then it will really hurt and not the good kind of pain.

My previous instructor started Kung Fu over 30 which staying at home as a parent. She's (yes she) looks like she is 16 (at 40). My current instructor (who will be killing me for missing a few weeks) has been doing it since his time in Spetz Natz 30 years ago. He's lot scarier than her but he limps everywhere since his knees are shot. Start easy and don't think about competition at first. Rushing to competative fighting gets you hurt fast and at 28 you heal much slower than 18.You think 28 is too late to start training?
