Without RD in any thread regarding food i feel what you said is true.

Its all just opinion i guess. I would prefer to use NLS but my fish like to eat hikari more and even starving them does not change minds.
However saying NLS is less smelly than massivore is rediculous. Especially the thera + is the most disturbing fish food smell i have the experience of dealing with. And i am pretty tolerant of bad smells.

i was given a partial bag of massivore with some fish i bought once upon a time.. the fish ignored it, and it fouled my tank, turned the water cloudy and stinky. we did a super gravel vac and replaced 150% of the water over the next 3 days, and changed the filter pads in the canister filter before i felt the tank was safe for fish again.

needless to say, even though i do use some hikari products, i won't use massivore again.

We should start hitting the gym bro. My metabolism isn't what it used to be.

It really does not surprise me that a fish offered both carnivore/massivore and NLS prefers the Hikari. It even has MSG in it.
I will take a burger and fries over grilled chicken breast and vegetables any day, but that doesn't mean it's good for me.

But, all my fish hit NLS HARD, and obviously seem to enjoy it.
I don't offer anything else. If they want to eat, they eat what I offer. YOU have complete control over your fish. IMO most failures to switch to a different food are because people don't hold out long enough. Any CA Cichlid should be able to be pellet trained with time and effort.

I've had some issues with the Thera formula "smelling" but I currently feed it to two tanks with absolutely no problems.

I completely agree with you. The difference being, I just added these fish. IME it's better to get picky eaters back on what was their staple, then making the switch. Every fish in my house is on NLS but these two are still settling in. (my Axolotly gets sinking carnivore pellets on a regular basis though). In the long run, I will get these two on market shrimp along eith NLS. I really do need larger pellets though..

Most market shrimp has preservatives in it that I wouldn't feed personally. If you want to feed it, I would get the preservative free stuff at Whole Foods. Really no point though if you're feeding NLS--primary protein is krill.

As for not waiting it out to try to switch them to NLS... I don't think you would have had any problems if you waited, personally. I have a hard time believing a 14" dovii would starve before taking NLS. I certainly don't see why you couldn't start now that they've eaten a few times.
Pellet size shouldn't be a big deal... My Cuban male is close to 12" and he will even eat 1mm pellets.

Weird I never notice any smell with Thera +A Jumbo.

I never even noticed the garlic smell.
Only smell I get is if I stick my nose in the bucket, even then it smells better than any Hikari I use.


I'm not even against using Hikari, I just prefer NLS.
I grew up watching my dad feed Hikari to his fish.
I just wish they could do something about the smell of all the large pellets.

i recently brought some hikari floating food sticks for top feeding carnivorous fish, is this stuff a floating version of massivore? the prob i have with this is when my O eats it most of it comes out his gills
