Maybe not YoYo Loaches?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought the four Juvenile Berdmorei today, all that was available.

They acclimated well and immediately began eating NLS mini pellets.

Although I'm a little disappointed at the small size, I think it actually increases their survival chances against the lone adult Berdmorei.
They are lightning fast and can instantly dissappear into the hardscape.

They were primarily being fed algae wafers, which probably wasn't the best choice. They should color up pretty quick with a better diet.

Just an update. The two smallest of the juvenile Berdmorei Tiger Loaches have died. My guess is they were killed by either the adult Berdmorei Tiger or the bigger remaining two siblings. Berdmorei are notorious for killing weaker conspecifics.

On a brighter note, I bought six juvenile YoYo Loaches and have them in quarantine. I went ahead and dosed a round of Prazipro.
The last time I bought fish from that particular store I brought home gill flukes.

Only one of the juvenile Berdmorei Tiger Loaches remains. He's a tough one, who chases away Loaches 3x his size. The little guy has really colored up and is growing fast.

The adult Berdmorei seems to ignore the Juvenile, which is a good thing. The juveniles color is much more vibrant than the adult Berdmoreis was at the same age. The juvenile seems to be more aggressive as well.

Great thread. What is the suggested minimum group size for loaches? Is 5 a good start?

Well I haven't kept to clowns or modestas, but I've had yoyos a couple different times and I'd say 5 or 6 minimum, but I'd shoot for 8-12 personally. Better watching in bigger groups, there's always a couple off in the rocks scavenging or daydreaming in the corner, but with a bigger group there's usually still a group of them swimming in a pack playing together, playing tag, or whatever they find to interest themselves.

I have got many wild caught local loaches. Broadly, they are all found in massive colonies of hundreds, and more usually thousands.

I don't think you get the proper behaviour and politics unless you have a substantial group. Suggest five is too small, and you should start with twenty.

My main reason for getting them, in addition to them looking and acting cool, is snail control in my tank in the wake of selling my rays. Because of the size & price of the ones available locally here in Cincinnati, as enticing as dropping $600-800 on a group of 20 sounds 😵‍💫, I don’t have that much to spend on loaches atm 😅

I keep four Modestas. They have done quite well together for eight or nine years. I only have a 120 gal. tank. If I had more space, I'd gladly increase the population.

Four or five Modestas should be fine for most good sized home aquariums.
