brich 999 .......... the answer to tank size can be found here:

That thread debunks the "1000 gallon min" that you constantly read on the interweb.

Water quality is just as important as tank size, probably much more so. Your tank is plenty big enough for a single adult mbu, as long as you are willing to keep up with the water quality as the fish matures.

As far as the cat & gar, obviously the gar is out of the question, and personally I wouldn't keep a cat that has the potential to do harm either.

Are you saying I cant keep th gar and mbu together? Neither are aggressive at all, I'm just wondering if the puffer will attack them, not so much the other way around

I mean neither of the fish i have are aggressive, I'm just trying to figure out if the mbu is generally a mean fish

From what I have read and understood the personality of a Mbu is quite random. Some can be kept with nearly anything, while others will chomp (with enormous teeth) anything that is placed in the same tank as them. I wouldn't risk housing it with anything that you aren't willing to lose. I've also read stories of puffer being kept with tank mates for weeks, months, even years, before waking up one morning and seeing the tank mate (sometimes several times larger) mutilated. Also, if your tank mate DID decide to harm the puffer it would likely die since Mbu have toxins.
