I haven't been on MFK to much but it looks like your always doing something new. lol
looks good so far, i like the 3d background. It will compete with my girls 5.5g and my 20g (Still needs to fill in and reproduce).

Bro Nick! How you been? Got link or pics of your ladies tanks? Would love to see them.

i have been watching this for a few days and it looks fantastic! i have a few questions tho

how did you make the 3D back round? whats it made out of?

Thanks for following along Vince! I am always redoing a tank at my house. I like the setup part of the hobby just as much as the fish. I buy pre-made backgrounds from a company called "designs by nature". They are SO much cheaper than other domestic BG companies. The guy that runs the show over there is named Matt and is really good to us MFK'ers. I don't trust myself to build my own and since these are really cheap it just makes more sense to buy than build.

This is probably the best thread ever, your dad would be so proud of you :) Keep us updated :) (Not that you haven't been lol)

lol thanks Al! :D doubt it's the best but fun little project none the less. Little tanks are awesome in their own right.

if you dont mind can you explain to me how your tank has no nitrates? and how you " skip the nitrate cycle"

also what kinda plants are int the back ?

Sure thing Vince. In a nutshell, plants consume ammonia before nitrate. Most poeple add plants to help reduce nitrates, they do an OK job at it but not the results I am talking about. By adding lots of plants and understocking the tank, the plants consume the ammonia from the fish, avoiding the nitrogen cycle. There is no ammonia to convernt to nitrites and then onto nitrates. I am not eliminating nitrate, I am avoiding the process (in a measurable volume anyway). Not sure why more people aren't into this type of natural filtration to be honest. :( I still do regular water changes but that is for mineral replenshiment, not removal of disolved organics.

Finally set up the plumbing on the 2211. Got all the quick disconnects hooked up and hoses cut.

I had to move the shelf from the middle part of the stand dowen to the bottom since the canister is too tall.

The white sand in the tank before is nice looking but very fine. Since I am upping the flow quite a bit I decidd to switch it to a heavier grain sand. This sand is my favorite, it is Lapis Lustre #1C. Best sand on the planet!!! :headbang2This is how it looks in my 120 gallon.

You guys think I should leave the 2211 under the stand or move it behind the tank? I kind of like seeing it TBH.

Now I am on to cutting up all of the foam needed to keep the freakin pleco from camping out behind the BG. I bought waaay too much of this stuff. :yuck:

It's looking good! Have you carved up the flowerpot yet? I'm interested in how that turns out. I've used them for breeding, but I don't really like the way they look in an otherwise naturalistic tank

I did. I am nbot sure if I love or hate it TBH.. I think I like it? Some patchy krylon and some fake plants or something might make this look much better. What do you think? (be honest please) lol.. The trick is to use a rusty old razor so it tears just as much as is cuts and cutting thin slices off from as many directions as possible.

^ honestly this was just a "why not" since I had a half can of pond foam going to waste if I didn't try. It dries out once you open the can. Nothing to lose really. :D
