MFK's Official Minitank - Rebuild (ZERO NITRATE)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dang, there are only two places in the entire country that warehouse the Lapis Lustre sand. One is in California (or maybe both, I'm not sure). So the shipping is rough. $67 to ship both bags to Kentucky. So, JK, I'd end up paying about the same as you do, around $0.50/lb once I include shipping.

Not sure if I really want to spend the money on this or not...

if anyone else wants to look into ordering the sand online, here's the site:

Anyways, end of derail. Thanks for all the information and inspiration JK!

Hey JK, I can't remember. How much of the Lapis Lustre sand did you use in your 120g, and how deep is the bed?

Those lights look great on your tanks! My 2 24" double brights arrive today :nilly:

I'll probably slap them on my 48" 60g until I have my new 100g ready for prime time.

I found a supplier for the sand, $14.11 for 100lb !!!

Fortunately, they have a location that's about 10 minutes from my house.

Unfortunately, that location apparently can't order the sand :irked:.

So I'm pricing shipping for 2x 100lb bags. I'm guessing shipping will probably cost 2-3 times as much as the dang sand itself will :irked:.

No worries bro. I pay exactly $0.50 / lb. Like I said, not cheap but worth every penny IMO. I have roughly 100-120 lbs in the 120 gallon. It's a solid 3" deep (I prefer deeper sand beds). I am not worried about turning over the sand since I have a group of Satanoperca in there. They keep it stirred for me.

BTW the change in lighting has made a night and day difference with them. They are twice as confident as they were before. I keep a school of colombinan tetras in with them (highly recommend) and they are schooling tighter and more confident as well.

Right on I am stoked for you! We need pics!! I wish I could take photos like you added :(

If you put a UV on your 10 gallon I will laugh so hard! I would put that money towards another UV for your big tanks. ;)

I would put the LEDs on all my tanks but my planted tank needs a bit more light. But I am putting them on my 20 gallon, 90 gallon, and 125 gallon for sure. I'll probably get a single bright on my 20 and double bright on the other two. I agree they might not have the best output but they are sleek looking fixtures and get the job done and the prices aren't bad at all.

Why, a UV and inline heater on this tank would be sweet! This is the official minitank after all. ;) My other tanks already have UV.

Agreed, clockwork. I'm gonna order one of the double brights, but I'm gonna try it out on all my tanks, and if it looks good, I'll probably end up slowly swapping all my lights out to LED's over the next couple months. I wonder how much energy I'll save not running 8 fluorescent fixtures (T8 and T12, most 40w each) vs running 8 LED fixtures...

I have my 20 gallon with a 3D background! Who made this official buddy? I think a GREAT contest would be to have a mini-monster tank competition at some point. Would be a lot of fun. :D
