Midas growth (lots of pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice fish, very healthy looking. I also use NLS with good results. at 9.5" in a little over a year is excelent growth for a feamale. Gotta love Amphilophus. I just picked up a nice male yesterday at our local meet the lfs that hosted it brought them in from Rapps, supposed to be F1, either way should be a beast already showing a nice hump @ ~3.5"

Great job on that girl!

thanks :D im surprised hat her growth but she hasnt laid a single batch of eggs yet so im assuming that has everything to do with her growing to a chunky 9.5" in a year.

i hope your guy turns out to be a stunner, good luck. as long as you enjoy him, it doesnt matter if he is F0, F1 or a mutt. i only see it mattering to fish snobs who cant help but show off and breeders. i have no idea what tubby is, i got her at a reputable lfs labelled as midas so she probably is pure. either way i love her, mutt or pure.

if only they were nicer to each other i would have a tank full. even with how chilled tubby is with tankmates i dont want to make her snap by putting another amphilophus in with her, even though it is tempting to try something less aggressive like lyonsi.

Tubby has decided she wants to lay eggs. I think it is the summer heat and the tank is sitting at 26 degrees C. This is her 1st batch that I am aware of since I got her in Feb 2009. She cleaned the flower pot until it was spotless. Although she has laid and she is a midas, she is being very good with her tankmates over approaching her and the pot.
She has only claimed about 12" sq. around the pot and her aggression has increased a little but still nothing compared to what I've read a midas out of breeding mode is supposed to be, never mind laying eggs.

She's a BIG girl! Looks like I need to get my fish on the NLS plan.

Thanks for the kind words. She is a little over 9" holding the tape up to the tank, I don't agree with removal just for measuring so it will remain an estimate.
Since I switched to NLS the red on the pectoral area has popped and her stripes more defined blue/grey instead of a washed out grey. I was pretty skeptical of the claims of NLS but the pics speak for themselves.
Saying that I do know that some of the intensity is from her being in breeding mode.

I am going to do a w/c today and remove the eggs to keep aggression down. She may be playing nice just now but I don't want to take the chance much longer.
