Are you sure your Midas is a male?
8 months & only 5" that's quite small.
I have a female who is about 6-8", I rescued her so I don't know how old she is my guess would be a few years old.

I kept my male alone for about 6 months, he doesn't like any fish near his size or bigger.
I added in a few of my hybrids as dithers & he seem ok with them.(so far)
He doesn't like my female too much & will not tolerate her being in his tank.
My female used to be in a community tank(before I got her) but she goes insane @ the sight of another fish, she is alone & being conditioned to spawn again.

it does seem small for that age , i got mine 2 months ago and he was about 2.5 inches and he's now 5"
i'm still feeding him twice a day NLS earthworms and meal worms.
mine won't tolerate anything in his tank including me  , i had 10 tiger barbs which he killed them all and had to remove my adult male bristlenose before he killed that as well :)

I find my RD's/midas more personable than any of my cons, or any other cichlids I've kept in the past.
Me & my big RD have a "love hate" relationship.
He luv when I'm outside the tank, but hates me when I'm doing maintenance. :naughty:
My female Midas hates me all the time, she just attacks me inside or outside the tank.:grinno:

I've kept most of the most common cichlids found on the market too.
2nd would go to my Texas, they were pretty nice too, always biting the glass & reacting every time they see me.
3rd GT's, other than him going on regular hunger strikes, he was a cool fish to own. & my small guys were really slow growers.
4th FM's: I luv seeing them challenge other fish.
When they're flaring their gills it's really quite a sight.

I think the cons loose their charm once their fry end up as feeders.
It was hard the first time, but they breed so often so I don't really have a choice. :D
Since loosing my original pair, I really don't see my cons like I used to.
I've been thinking of getting rid of them for a while now.

Thankssss . your so right about the cons after they lose there babies they become un-fascinating , i will pick up the female from my friend next week . i added the male Midas into my community tank bcuz i never wanted him dying and the SEVERUM is bulling him -_- lol hes only 4-5'' that may be the reason.

what would you rate the female midas(Pic) ? like looks , size etc . should i introduce her first ? do you think the male will accept her right away? also whats the growth rate for your midas ?

The bullying might be a good thing for your boy. ;)
My GT used on pick on my RD when he was smaller, it mos def put him in his place.:naughty:
Beware RD/Midas find their "inner Devil" around this size.
I really hope you moved your guy into a bigger tank &/or raised the heat for him(@ the very least).

150G is a good size for attempting a pair of RD/Midas.
I would place the female in the tank 1st, let her claim a nice piece of territory in the tank, then try the male.

It's really hit or miss, my male will not allow my female in the same tank even with dithers.
I had to move her out before things got really ugly.
She's a tough girl though, she still laid eggs even after the male roughed her up, 20-30 mins after the fight.
I have a male growing out & might try him, but odds are she won't accept him judging by the way she treats the fish I try with her.
There are a few members that have been successful, I might just be one of the few that have 2 nasty RD/Midas.
:naughty: ;)

Just put them in together. If the male doesn't accept her, then in my experience it's not going to matter anyway if she was there first or not. 2 5inch fish in that 150 gallon tank should be no prob, and if it is he just hates her.

I bought a female for the fish in my avatar. Bought her 3 months ago at 8 inch, now she is over 10. I had a male Midas that hit 12 inch within a year.

Female Midas are jut as awesome as male Midas, only difference is the smaller hump and they max out at a smaller size, but they still get huge. When it comes to personality and aggression I see no difference.

The male seems to be doing alot better. he changed from pale orange to a very bright orange with white spots , hes also eating like a pig lool . the only sad thing is..... he bullied my cons and forced them to flee there spawn and later ate the babies :( . i felt so bad but cons spawn alot and those babies would've died sooner or later ....

Don't worry, my con fry end up as treats for my RD's/Midas too.
;)
